I don't think they marched all night, at least I don't think they did. I would guess that this march would be done at a very slow pace indeed, as they couldn't see squat. What made it worse was when they did halt I don't think Custer allowed them to have anything hot for breakfast only raw bacon and water. I hope this is correct as I have just got in from a late shift and have no access to by books.

I disagree Crowsnest the observed horse herds told all the scouts it was a Big Village. Custer even if wanting eyes on would have seen it as soon as he climbed the bluffs. Martin and Kanipe confirm the observation as does the 4 troopers in C company who left before reaching Weir. Instead they travel all the way up as far as Weir and then down to MTC before sending Martin. Benteen would be visible in SFRC I would believe as soon as Custer tops out.

I think that every officer knew that this was going to be a big village, Benteen himself commented that just by looking at the size of the main trail, that they would be facing one of the biggest villages they would ever see.
I wonder if Custer's lack of interest regarding the pony herd would be down to the notion that his enlisted Indian scouts would be involved in rounding them up, so this was down to Reno and his pony herders to take care of rather then himself.
