If anyone is interested in doing a group discussion on Gordon Harper's book. I thought it would be good to begin on 8/1 with the first couple chapters.

I will be interested but I do not have it yet. Cheers I have absolutely no problem delaying the discussion until you are ready. Just let us know. I did check my Kindle account because some Kindles are lendable but unfortunately not this one.

Dave,
I know what you mean but I think it flows well enough, do you think the last chapter thing would have been so apparent if they hadnt mentioned it?. I would say it's one the better ones and I think Beth's book club idea is fantastic, I would love to do the same with some of the other great books, maybe 'vanishing victory' next?
Best wishes
Joe

I have no objection to any suggestions for the next but it should be an easily available book at a moderate price--I do realize we all have our own 'ouch' point when it comes to the price of a book though. Lets face it there are a lot of books out there that are great but because they are out of print, they are pricy.

I had a copy as soon as it came out, pre-ordered, so I was able to form my own conclusion prior to the furor that followed. I never knew Gordon but had read many if not all the threads he posted on. His ideas were based on his vast amount of research and personal study of the Little Big Horn.
The last chapter is well researched but was written by another respected scholar so I don't know what Gordon Harper's thoughts really were. Nothing against the book as it is very enlightening and well written. I look forward to the book study as I have not reread the book since it came out finally in the Spring of 2014 I think.
Dan aka Benteen commented one time that if a person was a Benteen fan the chapter would not be as well liked as if you felt Benteen failed Custer. Something like that but don't hold Dan to my poor memory. Anyway whatever he said I agreed with. Regards Dave

joeg I will start rereading Harper's book as soon as I finish For Cause and Country: A Study of the Affair at Spring Hill & the Battle of Franklin by Eric A. Jacobson. It is a gem of book dealing with a misunderstood and little known affair. It took place in the West and was overshadowed by Sherman's March to the Sea. I highly recommend this tome to those who are interested in the Army of Tennessee, John Bell Hood, Patrick Cleburne or the War itself. Regards Dave

Beth,
Fair enough, I just got a bit carried away with your great idea, I'm half way through vanishing victory and wondered what those more knowledgeable (and that includes just about everyone on this board) make of it .
Best wishes

I used to keep in touch with Gordon Richard (Hunkpapa) and I recall having a discussion with via e-mail about the book, and he said that Gordon Harper left behind quite a lot of info about his theory concerning the north/south flow or the lop and chop.
He also went on to say that chapter 10 was all his work and his conclusions were drawn from primary sources and his own theories, so none of it was drawn from Gordon Harper’s work, but he said that all this was explained in the endnotes.
I wish I knew just how he is getting on, as he has been really ill and I cannot contact him.

Beth Do not wait for me just kick off when you are ready. I am pretty busy right now. Thanks! shhh-you'll blow my cover of not having more than the first two chapters reread at this time. I had great plans of reading on vacation and most days I didn't even bring either my kindle or computer out of the bag. I wasn't on the boards when Harper was so I would appreciate learning what kind of guy he was.

I have some and written chapters that Gordie had sent to me. I am sure others do also.
Our ICE (Independent Company of Explorers) adventure was set for 2010. There was to be some GPS locations and some meetings with Cheyennes. As we know Gordie passed away in 2009.
My personal feeling is that the book was good to go without the Gordon Richards chapter. The problem was he held up the publication to a point that it was choice of include it or don't publish the book. So the disclaimer was put in the book.
