The only reason Custer would withdraw from the Cemetery area would be because: a) he is meeting more force to his front than he feels he can handle. To withdraw without leaving your backside totally unprotected, you have a unit cover the unit that is withdrawing. That could have been I company's mission by going over BR into the swale area. b) He sees his left flank exposed by hostiles coming up from Deep Ravine. He has to pull back or be attacked from the rear by those coming from Deep Ravine. c) He sees his right flank exposed by Indians coming across at Ford D and swinging around to get behind him from the north. d) He sees a, b, and c all occurring at about the same time. An immediate withdrawal back toward battle ridge is the only way to avoid being surrounded.
If I company was sent over BR to cover the withdrawal, Custer probably wondered why there was no covering fire. He had no idea there were a whole lot of hostiles kicking Keogh's butt, blocking his ability to withdraw to the east.

What is the timing for men going back to Custer from I and C and L. Custer must hold longer? Cheers

Mac, it depends on just how much trouble he was in, if we go down the path of a either a fighting withdrawal or Custer holding on to the cemetery area until all five are united, then what would be his intentions?
If he thought that the cemetery area was the best place to launch any more attacks, then he must think that he is still in control. If he was attempting a fighting withdrawal back to Calhoun, then he knew that he was in trouble and had to retire.
Yan.

Do we have enough evidence to say there was hot action down by Ford D that would be enough to make Custer pull back? 2 markers at the trading post some below the cemetery? 6 Company E on Cemetery ridge. What else? Cheers

Frustrating the short hand isn't it? John Stands In Timber. Wolf Tooth's Grandson gave the family account while walking the battle field. Cheers

Duane, these accounts appear in several books, two produced by Mary Liberty(probably the best), you can find them on Amazon, one fairly recent.

Sounds like another one I need to add in common abbreviations.
Later today I'm going to move the glossary and abbreviation subject to a better area. I have trouble finding it and I know what I am looking for (a subboard) which means it must be nearly impossible for a casual browser. I am also thinking about adding a roster because I get tired of having to google it all of the time. Any other suggestions on what would be helpful?

Send me in a PM anything anyone wants added to the glossary with the definition and I will add it. Something like YMe is something that needs to be define as in I haven't a clue what it is. I probably won't get to making the changes until tomorrow at the earliest.
