Mister E: I think it highly unlikely than anyone but the person it was addressed to might have kept it much less the CINC West. At that stage of the game the Germans knew it was all but over in the Bulge offensively, and sending such a ridiculous demand was in effect the last throw of the dice for them. The 101st was not going anywhere. George was coming, and they were starving, and running out of literally everything that makes an offensive possible. The poor bastard probably looked at it, found out what it meant, said Oh shit, then tore it up.

These type things are always fun, and sometimes you learn something new and at other times you are just as frustrated as when you set out on your journey.

Well it's been a week now and I have had "zilch, nada, nowt, Jack sh*t on the question about that note. I posted it in two different sites, sites who are full of reputable people and not a dickie bird.

Ian, I think Zilch is about all you can expect. While I second your remark about the different sites (I too am familiar with them) being full of knowledgeable folks, there are some questions that do not have answers, and the whereabouts of the note in question is one of them.

Been poking around a bit, came upon interesting info re: Cooke/Benteen note, history thereof. Yes it is at West Point but interesting route it took getting there. Originally kept by Benteen then given away, “lost” for decades, believed to have been lost in a fire, finally being found. Fortunate that we have it today, could have been easily destroyed or lost. Also in the site is letter from Benteen to his wife dated 7/4/76. Don’t believe I had seen it before or if I had I hadn’t paid much attention. Nothing new really but interesting reading to me. Info is from Col. W. A. Graham www.astonisher.com/archives/museum/frederick_benteen_little_big_horn.html

I think that the most valuable insight is that this letter to his wife was written before any locked in concrete opinions of the fight were present. It would not take long for them to appear, but not yet. Benteen was a keen observer of what he personally knew to have happened. I did not detect a bit of speculation in his narrative.
