According to Morison Nimitz did not accept the recommendation by Halsey to bypass Peleliu because he felt Peleliu and the Kossol Passage were needed as staging points for Leyte ------ Leyte, Volume Twelve, United States Naval Operations in World War II, page 33. He goes on to say that in hindsight it seems probable that STALEMATE II should have been countermanded. Commanders do not deal in hindsight.
According to the same reference Major General Rupertus moved the command post of 1st MARDIV ashore on 16 September, one day after the initial assault Page 40-41.
According to the same reference Admiral Fort and General Geiger with the approval of Admiral Wilkinson decided that the Marines could handle Peleliu, and on D+1 (16 September) authorized the release of the 321st Infantry from floating reserve to assault Angaur Page 44.
According to the same reference on 16 September (D+1) Halsey ordered Wilkinson to seize Ulithi as soon as practicable ----with resources at hand. The 323rd Infantry was tasked with assaulting Ulithi page 47

Found these diagrams to show the differences between the two raider battalions [Edison's & Carlson's], the main difference being how they molded their rifle platoons, both are very different from one and other, to be honest, Carlson's looks the more stronger. Edison's is first and Carlson's is second.

Edison's platoon also differed slightly depending what rifles they had, if they had M1903 Sprinfield's, they would add another BAR to each section, giving six to the platoon, but Carlson's platoon doubled this with twelve. The sub-machine guns are either Reising's or Thompson's.
