Hi Steve. It seems like the valley held no interest to Custer, let’s face it he didn’t even know the terrain or any value to the route as a tactical maneuver as he never went near the place, instead he sent Cooke forward. He wanted to attack from another direction just like he did at Washita, but the terrain and village size would make this a totally different battle. Col. Hoyt discusses the COG in detail in his paper. So if Custer went left he would be following Reno. Reno could prevent south movement if Custer moves to his left flank and on toward the horse herd. So either run the horses off the bluffs or if the Indians moved them to the village shoot them in the village. Thousands of horses reacting to the shooting would cause chaos in the village.
So I am confused when we say attack from a different direction. Reno had a right and left flank. Custer chose to go to the right. If he chose the left he could ride to the other end of the village faster than what he could on the right. As far as visibility the Cheyennes saw him coming and had more time to react than if he had moved quickly around the right of Reno. He would have had several choices in the valley. He never got to a viable choice on the direction he took. We know what he wanted to do but the terrain and time were not in his favor.
Regards
Steve

I think Custer chose the right because he did not know the extent of the village. Poor recon forced him to chose to go past MTC. At that point the Cheyennes could open a different front at thier end of the village.

That's right Mac. If you train them right, and treat them right, your soldiers will climb Mount Olympus for you and kick the crap out of Zeus. Do neither, and they will hate you till their dying day. Or at least Old Smokey before breakfast. I could not agree more with you Chuck in regards to training. The soldiers needed skillsets in which they were competent and the officers needed to know how to make the best available decisions.

Mac
I think if you know the skill level of your troops or in my case LE officers your best available choice is not always the same. When the Indians decided not to run and they had overwhelming numbers willing to fight Custer should have reduced his available choices to the ability of what he had to work. Sgt Ryan wrote that even Custer would not fight these soldiers mounted. That seems to me to be telling on the battle readiness of the 7th.
Seems to me the best choice would have been the whole 7th in the valley with a blocking force as Reno did and Custer moving to the left to flank or envelop. The pack train remains behind Reno and Benteen is available where needed. Instead we see the 7th fed to the Indians a few companies at a time.
Off to Lake Powell to Patrol. This will be my 40th year of patrol there.

I suspect that Custer had precisely the opposite in mind. Stand buy for urgent news.

I guess that Europe just wasn'y ready for another handbagging......... or going all wobbly.
We have the remarkable situation where a change of leader will change nothing, elected members who simply cannot do what they are told to, and prospect of an election which will square circles and make the entire mess far far worse than the cluster shambles being practiced now. Sundays EU election results will be icing on the cake. Looks like Brussel's is clipping Farage's wings...... the problem with that is that he is a bulldog! I understand that he has shipped Juncker a crate of Glen Grant and two tons of sprouts. I truly hope that he is able to do to their assembly what has been done to ours. Go Farage! He's poison but oh what joy when he's giving Brussel's the burd. I'd guess that you are into Remain?

There is a litmus test for the Tory Party and I suggest that Bercow is a walking deadman as far as Black Rodding the house goes. Very interesting times, indeed. Andrea Leadsom I suspect that her gloves come off now and Bercow will be trawled through the trash and closely followed by a host of very odd party members under a plague of Tories. It's going to become very, very, nasty, bitter and cut-throat blood letting. Did someone mention Jeremy? Sit back and enjoy a complete farce.

HR, I won’t give my opinion on leaving the EU and Brexit on an open forum, why? Because I will end up using industrial language. I always thought that the rest of Europe were making a mug of Britain and Germany and that a lot of hangers on who paid nothing in simply free loaded for decades of us both. You will notice that some of these free loaders are now kicking Britain now that we want to leave, which shows that they are a bunch of arse holes. They should be patting us on the back and thanking us for all the millions we have put in over the years, so they are a total disgrace the pigging lot of them.
Let some body else bank role them and pay for all the Euro MPs who are on the gravy train on our expense. Now if you want to continue this debate, please let’s do it on our private members post board.

Fair do's. The underlying principal was and is 'Peace in our time'...... now, who said that?
He's a dead ringer for Rees-Mogg. N'est pas?
