Hopefully, Ukraine can get itself out of Bahkmut shortly and start tossing B-61's all over it. That gives RuFed the ultimate headache since pretty much anyone, anywhere, can nuke their own territory no questions asked. Comrade, they nuked themselves - Do I care if Europe survives..... not with Russia all over it.

So are these M-1’s “surplus”, been sitting around for years in yards or are they top of the line latest incarnations of the Abrams?

Appears to be top of the line Mr. E. They appear to be upgraded M1A2's. Note the tank commander's position on the right side of the turret. Can't rightly say where they came from though, and I was wondering myself. They have a standard NATO Camo paint job, while the M-1's here at Carson is still in desert camo. All of our Strykers are in base green with no other camo applied. Rumor has it that our 3rd (heavy) brigade tanks will soon get the same all green makeover paint job as well, but I cannot verify that. The Marines gave up about 150 M-1s when they disbanded their tank battalions, but I think they were just A2's without any upgrade.
I had hoped that the Leopard 2's would be A6's which is the next to latest version, but seeing that film clip it appears they are A4's. Still a very capable tank in the hands of good tankers who do not happen to be Turks

link Troops are getting their hands on the first batch of the Army's new armored personnel carriers, replacing a Vietnam-era vehicle that accounted for nearly one-third of tracked vehicles in the service's heavy armor units. On Monday, roughly 20 of the new vehicles were delivered to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, according to Breaking Defense and the Army. link If contract negotiations shake out, BAE will need to move from producing 12 vehicles per month up to roughly 16, with the goal of churning out 197 AMPVs each year, enough for a brigade-and-a-half. link Ukraine training on with B-52's.

Well, by my count, a single ABCT needs 126 AMPVs to replace the vehicles used for Command Posts, Ambulances, Mortar Carriers, 1SG Vehicles, etc. The brigade just got 20 of them.
So, not so wonderous as everyone wants to think.

Just to prove that the United States Army leadership is dumb as a box of rocks from time to time, the question to ask is why was this not done when the Bradley was introduced in the 1980's to replace the 113. Did the stupid shits that should think of these things not realize then that the AMPV was absolutely necessary to supplement and compliment the Bradley fighting vehicles then coming into service? The AMPV is nothing more than a turretless Brad. I guess 40 years to late is better than 50 years too late, but not much better, when you are playing with people's lives.

Budgets, funding and state interests, are a way of life. We need this, please sign here, is not how things work.
What this process does give well, is what's involved in ramping up numbers should that ever be called be for. As ever, you fight with what is at hand and available.
