In my search for knowledge, I am constantly looking for good, inexpensive map tools. This is one of them. www.hillmap.com/You can navigate to places in America and choose from a variety of maps to display, best of all, you can display two side by side, as seen in the below screenshot. I am having issues with making the tools work, such as line of sight checking and path making, but have emailed them asking for help.

From the above website you can go here: caltopo.com/map.htmlwhich lets you choose verious display settings, like 10 foot contour intervals which are much better for our purposes and give a much different picture than 10 or 20 meter contour intervals. caltopo.com/map.htmlThis shows Battle Ridge

And finally, just because I think it is neat and you probably altrady know about it, you can download pdf maps from NGS and the recent ones let you add on a app for pdfs that let you turn terrain features off and on to remove or enhance displayed objects as well as get evolution and coordinate data such as roads and boundaries. Below is the normal view.

And I think I have mentioned mytopo.com to you which lets you select size, location, and other map features and download for free or pay for a print out. This shot shows you the difference in a 1:10000 scale map vs a 1:24000 scale map.

Mike that first map you posted shows both Cemetery Ridge and a good portion of Battle Ridge extension. You may recall a previous conversation we had regarding you can't hold one without holding the other. I think that observation is fully played out on that first map. Then calculate how many troops it would take to hold the area, and if you ask Steve I am sure he would post the artifact find map covering this same area, to illustrate how large that artifact field is.
Now, if I had this quality of a map showing Lunga Plain - Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, it would make my day and add to my understanding of the Alligator Creek battle between the 1st Marines and Ichiki Butai on 21 August 42.

That's why I selected that one. I posted another view in your monster thread. Here's an attempt to show the coverage (without regard to deadspace*) of 5 companies occupying a 100m scrimmage line. With the average strength of say 38 guys, you would have 9 horse holders and 29 troopers on the skirmish line. At 5 meters a man, that is a 145 meter line, which since they would have to be placed for all around defense would result in a could result in a circle of about 50 meters in diameter. *EDIT: Working as a subject matter expert (SME) on a constructive simulation program (fancy wargame used for battle staff training) I had to educate the engineers about Army stuff, since most of them had trouble spelling "Army". I explained deadspace to some engineers once, and one of the women (who was an expert data modeler and database manager) exclaimed, "Mike, that's not dead space! IT'S LIVE SPACE!" To which I replied, "Huh! I never thought about it from the attacker's perspective. Excellent observation!"

And this shows a view of them in a circular defense by company over the whole of the ridge. I think both are spread a bit too thin for a successful defense. Each blue square is 100 meters Wish I could show deadspace.

I just can't help playing. Here is a carbine range (small dark circle) compared with the M60A3 Main Battle Tanks ranges for 7.62mm M240B, M85 12.7mm HMG, and the M68 105mm cannon. Obviously, dead space really rears its deadly head here, but I think it makes a nice comparison.

Chuck, Try this: opentopomap.org/#marker=14/-9.42459/160.05029Zoom down far enough and you get good topographic detail. You may have to piece the map together to get a good view of what you want. You do that be using the Microsoft Snipping Tool and then the Microsoft Image Compositor, both of which comes with Microsoft Windows. Mike

I am reminded of the Iron Duke's remark when he visited Waterloo many years after the battle "What happened to my battlefield" I guess the answer is civilization.

Yeah, you really need a tool so you can remove stuff you don't want to see, but of course, since contours can be altered by construction, it won't really be like it was.

I am reminded of the Iron Duke's remark when he visited Waterloo many years after the battle "What happened to my battlefield" I guess the answer is civilization. No, basically bulldozed some of the hill to build a monument called Lion's Mound It changed the total topography. The Duke wasn't happy about the destruction for a monument to the Prince of Orange (nicknamed Silly Billy) later King William II of Netherlands. Prince William was wounded in the battle.

Well that's not what Richard Sharpe called Billy in the Cornwell novel. This is a family web site though and I shall pass.
Yes I knew about the hill and the lion. But isn't that part of civilization too? Were it me all historical markers would be in the earth at ground level, and the surrounding area left pristine. If the Duke did not like the bloody lion, and tearing down of the most important terrain feature on the field to build it, who am I to disagree with him, one of the Great Captains.
