Mother nature is a beautiful parent to her world, but she can also be a bad mistress. I have noticed how the southern states and central America and the Caribbean, all seem to be suffering more over the last decade or more with bad weather, so it bodes ill for the future.

Beth: Your above comments echo all those of Debbie's former neighbors in San Antonio.
The President has declared Texas a disaster area which will free up funds and resources for rebuilding. That will be a blessing to those hard pressed, but the fact still remains as long as you have people in power in Austin that do not fulfill their responsibilities to the people they are sworn to serve, these things will keep on repeating themselves.
It will be a shift in demographics, along with the indifference of people like Abbott, and the arrogance of people like Cruz that will make Texas a Purple state within ten, and a reliably Blue state within twenty or thirty years. Michael Steele, when he was Chairman of the Republican Party warned his party of the coming political storm in Texas ten years ago, and they have so far ignored him. He warned them about Georgia too. As long as the Republicans feel that all they have to do is figure out how to win elections and not govern once the election is won, they are headed down the same road as the Whigs. That is bad for the country. It is bad for the democratic process. It is catastrophic for the future of humanity as we know it. The Republican Party in many ways, has become the political arm of the Flat Earth Society.
Phil's a tough old bird Ian. He won't go easy.

I have said many times that our winters are getting more mild and flooding is getting more common as mild winters means heavy rain.

With apologies to all and particularly Chuck, for even responding to his last, pointed at me, to include pen knives and artillery. First I don't perceive it as a duel. I have spent the weekend cleaning up branches at two properties, cutting and splitting logs. But, I guess much like Chuck I need to have my wrap up. In this thread, I took no issue with your comments regarding the Texas power problems to include ERCOT and government oversite. My comments to the effect that they did not kick up the natural gas quick enough was what I had heard. California does in fact have a grid, all states have a grid. poweringcalifornia.com/californias-electricity-grid-explained/Texas, is ranked 28th for the quality of power(prior to this debacle) California 38th or so. and congratulations, your state is around 12. I thank Mac for making me do a great deal of reading regarding power after one of my posts on a PM a bit over a month ago. By the way Mac Washington State is #1. No, Chuck my issue had nothing to do with power, it had to do with your pejorative term cabal, definition " clique · faction · coterie · group · set · band · party · camp · gang · ring · cell · sect · caucus · league · confederacy · junta · pressure group · ginger group · push · junto · camarilla" or " the contrived schemes of a group of persons secretly united in a plot (as to overturn a government)also : a group engaged in such schemes" With regards to my "personal attack" on the other thread, it was prompted by your continued lashing out politically, or holding grudges, and belittling others. Some of your quotes. "Now I really must go and put out the trash on the curb for pick up in seven inches of snow, cold as Rush Limbaugh's heart, and still coming." He is dead, the comment is very un becoming and misplaced here. "The same holds for such other "facts" like Wagner's 3411. Is 3411 a good place to observe the valley from? You bet. Is it the only place, that a good view can be obtained? No, it is not. So to say 3411 was the place used, has no evidence to back it up, other than one man's opinion," Never miss a chance to take a slap at Fred. "If you ain't got a fact, you ain't got shit as far as HISTORY goes. I went through this crap for forty years with the Alamo Mafia. I am a veteran of these wars." Really the Alamo Mafia, 40 years, why did you stay. It's not me with the anger issues, it is you. You even told me how much you get worked up over politics, you even told me how much someone very near and dear to you even calls you out on it. The front of the board is not the place for it, you are better than that. I've met you, enjoyed our meeting, appreciate your knowledge. You can rip up my posts about LBH, opinions and minutia all you want. I have very thick skin. You want to do political and ideologic commentary take it off the front page. Regards, Tom

Yes all states do have a grid. The difference between all the other 48 and Texas is that forty seven of them are interconnected and Texas is not. Therefore a power transfer between states is possible should any of the forty seven get into the problems Texas is having, and Texas does not have that capability because they are independent from all the others.
Cabal is a perfectly good word in the English language, and it was meant as I used it to denote that the cabal that runs Texas is serving their own purposes and not the purposes of the people of Texas.
Rush Limbaugh had a cold heart when he was alive. That has not changed now that he has passed from the scene.
You are quite correct about Wagner to a point. I attack his work product. I attack his opinions. I attack his methodology, I attack his hubris in thinking conscientiously or otherwise that he is THE authority on these matters we discuss, and I attack his arrogance in thinking everyone should think as he does. You have been there. Is there anything I said about 3411 that is not true. Is it a good place? Yes. Is it the only place? No. Is there any proof that it was the place in question? No. Could it have been the place in question? Yes. Therefore it is nothing but an opinion on Wagner's part. He can come here any time he wishes to dispute the issue face to face. Does not anyone who publishes open himself up for criticism? Why should Wagner be any different?
History is a collection of facts. If you do not have the facts then you do not have history.
My wife refers to it as "passion". If you do not have passion in this life for something, excepting ignorance and stupidity, then is life really worth living?
Why did I stay? Because I enjoy the subject. I enjoy the seeking of facts for some larger purpose.
Now I really must go I receive a late delivery of my latest Sherman build this morning and I am anxious to start.

Oh you two, you were like two best friends a while ago, real besties, talking on the phone almost on a daily basis and now this. This is all through politics, I work with a guy called Chris who, in political terms is pole opposite to me, but we never make it an issue.
Politics is not worth crap when it cones to friendship. You had Trump last year, now you have Biden, have you noticed any difference in you personal life? I don't think so, so stick to the real things in life, the grass roots things and forget those clowns in the Whitehouse because they don't give a shit about you.
Now get back on the phone and talk to each other again.

Final storm update. We now have water. The plumber replaced the water heater so we could turn it on. We have no further pipe damage, thank goodness. Now we are dealing with getting food. Pretty much everyone lost all of the food in their frig which means that everyone is needing food at the same time. Now we have water though we are at least fix pasta or rice. We have a delivery scheduled for tomorrow for at least some basics including tea since I am using my last teabag this morning. This has been one huge and expensive mess especially for families that havve beens stressed to the limits already. The sad thing is that it was foreseeable and preventable and I suspect that once the lawmakers get around it, fewer people will have jobs but nothing will change. D*** Texas Exceptionalism. Thanks everyone for letting me blow

When we lost power in KS for 6 days in a blizzard, I put my perishables in two coolers and put them outside. No help now, but you may think about it in the future.
Glad you made it.

You know we should have thought of that but we didn't--to our chagrin. After all, we were midwesterners at one time but we have lost that cold weather OMG it's a blizzard stock up instinct. Even our hurricane stock up instinct is getting weak.
We didn't lose the freezers, thank goodness- but the fridge part, milk eggs, butter veggies, mayo--that kind of things. We haven't been able to actually fix anything after the power came back because of the no water situation and could't risk our limited drinking water supply for things like making pasta or rice. Even a few cans of Spam only go so far after all.
We had warning about the cold of course but who could have foreseen the whole collapse of the whole *blessed* state power grid. Would you believe though, we didn't even have candles? That will be another thing to add to the list of things to have. A couple candles would have made the room warmer. We used to carry candles and blankets in the car just in case of bad weather and getting stranded when we lived in Iowa which did happen once but it was in Tennessee (A whole 'nother long story)
We never were in danger of freezing to death like I am sure you have heard there were cases in the state. We had enough blankets, throws and fleeces that we could even tuck the dog in his crate so he didn't get too cold even though he hates having his crate covered. We are also thankful that unlike many of our neighbors we didn't have to worry about small children and in one case a very young infant. BTW that neighbor with a 3 week old baby even offered for us to come stay with them but we declined because we didn't want to use their resources when they had such a small baby to think of-especially in the time of a pandemic. We just had a spoiled poodle who did not like the cold, limited water and frozen grass to walk on
Groceries are now getting restocked in the area but since since the grocery stores looked like Lowes when a hurricane was forecast, it's taking time and we can get by. We are supposed to get a delivery today but in the meantime we finally have been getting food from grubhub and ubereats-but not all of the restaurants are open yet or have limited hours. Life is returning to normal and soon it will be the same old, same old with the lessons perhaps forgotten. We will personally lay back a bottled water when we can get it and more shelf stable soups (which are terrible for low sodium diets) and get ready for the next thing that comes down the pike. I wouldn't be surprised if it is another bad year for hurricanes and other storms.
How are your problems progressing? Ours were fairly easy to resolve, it just took time and a bit of frustration. I know you are facing much bigger issues.

We’re still stuck in the same place. I should get an estimate Monday. Then I’m calling another guy. And the late next month, a company is coming to see if they can insert liners into my pipes. If so, it provides relief because I don’t have to rip my house apart.
And we get our shots on Monday.

Got my first shot this afternoon at Safeway. Placed on the list Monday. They called at 1600 hours today. By 1645 I was done, and a 1700 I was eating a Mushroom and Swiss burger at Culvers. Second shot one month from today. Easy process. No wait. In and out. Tool me longer to get my burger at Culvers than to get my shot at Safeway

Safeway, now there's a name from the past, they used to be a supermarket chain in England. They were in fact a cousin of a chain in the states, but disappeared over thirty years ago.
Glad you got your jab Chuck, nothing to it is there. We still have a problem over here with the black and Asian communities not coming forward for their vaccine. They don't trust it. It is killing off all their over 50s as they all live together in the same house with their families.
Mushroom & Swiss burger, sounds veggie, having a cheese and bacon quiche later with a English garden salad and crusty bread for tea.
