Then there is the ever popular - South of The Border, down Mexico way. That's where I fell in love when stars above came out to play.
Ted is going to live to regret doing that until the day he dies. He is one of the 100 most powerful people in this country, a U S Senator. When a U S Senator is calling you to get something done, you better damned well listen and if what he says to do is legal, do it. So while his people are freezing in his State, he leaves his dog in the house without warmth or water, and sashays off to Cancun. Then when caught at it, lies to cover his tracks saying his daughter made him do it. One of these days these clowns are going to understand that if you want to do something that is in secret, and you want no one to know anything about, you don't memorialize it in e-mails, which newspapers find, and that do not go away.
One former US Senator a Democrat said that "I like Ted Cruz more than any Republican member of the Senate", then went on to say " - "I hate Ted Cruz".
They may end up being shot in Texas too Ian, just give it a little time.

There are lots of wind farms in my area of Texas, which is north of Abilene and south of Quanah. All of them with only a couple of exceptions have been turning during this cold weather, Not hardening the infrastructure is the problem. ERCOT is mostly to blame, but the politicians should not have just taken ERCOT's word that all would be well. Gas lines should not have been freezing, should have been insulated better. Water pipes in the ceiling is normally a bad idea, but in Houston, where I have some family, and the Austin area where Beth is, the water table is too close to the surface to reliably run pipes underground, hence the pipes go above ground. It seldom ever hits freezing in Houston, but when it does, it is a certainty pipes will burst and when they thaw, the showers begin all over the house. The reason for the frozen pipe was two fold but both relating to the loss of power. If the water utilities would have could have maintained their pumps we at least probably would have kept our pipes open because I knew to leave the taps open in extreme cold. Right now almost all of the problems we are experiencing, damaged homes, lack of water, and now food shortages can be traced to two sources the failure of Ercot and the failureship of the state's government.

As for Cruz, he is the type of person that will always land on his feet. He is a smarmy a-kisser that has the ability to turn on a dime if he thinks he will get political gain. I expect he will be heading to Mara Largo in the next few days to beg forgiveness. Funny thing if he thought it was more politically astute to move away from Trump he would be gone in a moment.

That ERCOT post is the funniest thing I have read on this board in years.
Your opinion of Cruz is shared by all the Republicans I know Beth, every damned one of them, and my wife being a prominent functionary in the El Paso County Republican Party, I know a hell of a lot of them. Who would leave his dog to fend for itself in such a situation? That tells anyone all they need to know about Ted Cruz.
Ted Cruz would betray his own mother to Fidel and Raul, if it suited his own purposes.
This incident may not get him, and his role on 6 January may not either, but you can rest assured he will drive his boat on rocks and shoals eventually, and suffer, as they say in the Navy, a fate worse than death for doing so.

That's what I did mean Mike. Did they move South of The Border to Mexico? I had not heard.
I understand Gene Autry was there too, and the Cisco Kid was the bad guy who was trying to base submarines from a "unnamed foreign power" along the Mexican coast. Autry shot the son of a bitch, but his sister who Autry was sweet on, became a nun. (That's where - In Veil of white by soft moonlight, she knelt to pray - comes from). Imagine that, Gene Autry deflowering a nun. Cowboys, there has not been a decent one since William S. Hart made his last movie. But it was fiesta, and we were so gay, South of the Border down Mexico way.
I think it was written by a couple of guys from Widnes.

South of the Border on Interstate 95 in South Carolina, for those who do not know, is the biggest piece of crap tourist trap ever devised by uncivilized man. It caters exclusively to want-a-be-confederates, and other no accounts, unless you are in need of gas. Then you have to think about stopping there, or walking ten miles to the nearest gas station when your car sputters to a halt for lack of fuel. Given the choice between the two I would rather walk the ten miles.

If it was wrote here Chuck, it would resemble work by Phil Redmond or Alan Bleasdale.
If I wrote it, it would be based on tales of daring do on the rugby pitch against our old foe Warrington, games where your captain gets his head knocked off in the first minute of the match!!!!

Having known you for so long Ian, I have come to think of everyone from the UK as being from Widnes, except the Queen. Everyone knows she lives in Scotland, but does have her vacation home there at Buckingham Palace. God save that wonderful woman.
The song was written by two fellows from the UK. Can't recall their names. Don't even know if they were ever in Mexico. Gene Autry sure liked the song, and Willie Nelson's version is, I think, my favorite, although I really do like Patsy Cline's and Marty Robbins' renditions as well.

An update. So far I haven't been able to get a plumber to even return my call so we will be on bottled water for drinking and thanks to our neighbor grey water for sanitation. Steve's company has provided everyone with a flat of water and boxed meals so we have at least the food issue covered. It is amazing how many things require water to prepare.
Also, since most people around here lost all the food in their frigs and freezer getting food is--interesting. We are lucky we have spam, tuna and canned chicken plus shelf stable types of food enough for a couple weeks which by then I imagine the food shortages will disappear. It might not be tasty food or low sodium but we will get through.
Funny how its very much like life after the tornado I experienced when I was 11 and we had to rely on the Red Cross and churches to provide the basics and the whole state picked in to help us recover-especially from towns that had experienced a tornado in the past. It was a tradition since then that when there is a major tornado in the state a busload of people from Charles City go to help. It was a busload of Amish men that pulled up and cleaned up our yard and our neighbors from fallen trees and debris just as my mother was standing on the porch feeling overwhelmed by the mess and wondering where she should even start. They helped board up windows as well. The Amish at least in Iowa are the most caring and selfless people you could ever meet.
Steve's company is also opening the showers for one hour family slots so that problem is solved and now we are faced with the problem of dishes and laundry. Such problems.-minor issues from now on.-though I will be very happy when we find a plumbehowever it sounds like water heaters will be just as rare.
I think of 3rd world countries were such basics are a daily problems and count my blessings that for us it is just a matter of time but for many it's a way of life. I also remember that there are large parts of our own country were their is food and housing insecurity on a daily basis.. It's humbling.

Ah now I get you now Chuck, yes one was from Northern Ireland and the other was a Yorkshireman. The Queen seems to spend a lot of time at Widnsor Castle but her private country house is at Sandringham. She does love Scotland and her pad "Holyroodhouse"
We are concerned about Prince Philip, he went into hospital last week, not covid related but he is 99 and is 100 in a few months.
