DIME - Let's review
Military strategy does not exist, or more properly does not exist alone. It is an element of National Strategy, growing out of what is in any countries area of vital concern.
National Strategy is a four legged stool. Those legs are Diplomacy - Information (operations) - Military - Economic. If any one of those four legs is missing or damaged, it places the viability of the stool in question. In the same manner, if any element of National Strategy is missing, obsolete, inefficient, or wrongly conceived then all of the National Strategy is placed in jeopardy. We use the term DIME as a memory aide, and to understand it you do not need a secret handshake or decoder ring, only the ability to understand that a four legged stool cannot stand if all four leg are not present
Easy to understand example from history:
How did DIME apply to the American Civil War.
Abe Lincoln and Winfield Scott were cagy old buzzards. Let's see what they came up with
DIPLOMACY - Keep good relations with the major European powers, particularly England and France. Keep them from recognition of the Confederacy, and using all of the powers of diplomacy, to included diplomatic black operations, identify and neutralize pockets of Confederate sympathy in those countries, by ANY means at the disposal of the U S Government.
INFORMATION (Operations)Many information operations were successfully conducted during the ACW, but none so strategic as the Emancipation Proclamation. Dismiss from your mind that it was primarily a humanitarian gesture, It was not. It was an information operation that completely meshed with the D-M-E. Diplomacy was served in that slavery was becoming a red headed step child on the world stage. The sooner you were rid of the institution, the better your countries standing on the world stage. Militarily it syphoned off combat power from the Confederate Army. States Rights that old bugaboo raised it head. States raised troops. Governors were reluctant to release all the troops they raised for field service in fear of insurrection. Georgia was particularly sensitive in this regard. The greatest military fear the South had was a 3 million strong fifth column in its rear. Economics in the South depended upon a labor force, that had just been given a hope of a better tomorrow if the North won, so the economics are nearly self explanatory. If you were a slave in the South who would you want to win, and more importantly what could you do about it. If you picked one bushel less cotton a day, you just aided the Norther war effort.
MILTARY: The Anaconda Plan, first squeeze, then break off small bites at a time was a masterful plan. Had it been followed to the letter initially, it would have probably finished the war before Lincoln's first term ended. At first it failed though. Not enough ships to establish and maintain an impenetrable blockade, bone headed idiots like McDowell and a litany of the like minded, who wanted to play the child's game of king of the hill, instead of the adult game of kill the dirty bastard that opposes you. It was when Grant started plying this latter game that the Anaconda really started to put the squeeze on.
ECONOMIC: Destroy the ability to make war and sell good to raise money to make war by destruction of any and all means of economic base and power
Any one of the DIME Elements that were missing and Dave probably could spend that Confederate money he hides under his mattress

I'm moving out of this topics 2nd page to its third and find it interesting in a number of ways and particularly the Middle Eastern historical contexting. Enjoyable. I applaud Beths grasp of history and distance since its real value is with what has ended and been forgotten to following generations. The ultimate lesson is that we are tribal and intelligence matters but is ultimately useless because the simplest of lessons are lost in time.
An anecdote is Custer who got his staff position by scouting across the Chickahominy for Barnard during the attempt on Richmond. Into this I can weave some irony (for me) with an illustrius career (per se) beginning and ending in rivers. I believe that Custer was shot at the river whilst his regient was repeating the tactics of Washita. It's not added here for discussion but rather the simple point made about rivers of fate.
We are tribal and the rivalries are unending. Carthage and Rome and what did we learn........... The Parthian Shot. Brits cannot do justice to British History. Same for America. You are the history and care about it and how it makes you look and feel. That is why Little Bighorn is so special and why what happens with it, does. Done. Keep up the content it is priceless.
Every nation understood the very serious risks of epidemic and look what happened. We are very sad. Humanity is pathetic splendour. We don't care, or do we. Stay well and avoid the body count. Toodle pip.

I have a query, which may interest and be worthy of research. There has been some academic interest in the 2019 World Military Games, and it went political through Wolf Warriors in recent past. Lots of the athletes were ill and came home sick. It's something of a quandry offering odd results in gentic research of strands of the SARS-Cov-2 virus. It's under the radar at the moment and flying blind. I submerged my head into this virus and there are quite incredible minds involved. The gem which I uncovered is a huge I know but we don't know yet. If you can stand techinal blurbs (ecellently written) and can grasp complicated conceptual science, enjoy - adding lost link - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7123490/ voila. It turns your head, if you can get it around it. I reasoned that a cheap test for the virus is wortwhile. Wake up, test and be responsible - isolate if you need to. Stop the spread. How to do this? Well, it turns out that the trusty old toilet roll or wet wipes, can be adapted to such use but of course testing is arogantly big business. I'll put a topic up when I can snap off inertia and bored wonder at the mess we are in and the one coming down the line. Read the paper. Bleeding edge science. Another 'off by one' item I ran across in deep delving the floods of Coronavirus research since last December is US microbiologists such as based in Chicago, who are involved in level 4 research with Chinese virolists in a li'l place called Wuhan. Flitting back and forth, back and forth researching................ you guessed it.
