I found this map at Montana Memory Project, a great resource for maps of the area. It is attributed to Father De Smit but I believe Father De Smit's map was based on the Lewis and Clark map of the area.
It is a 1840 copy of a map by Father De Smit and I have to admit it took me some time to find exactly what I wanted because so many names on the map have been changed with time and many are unnamed. I know for some this is easy but I know that many people might find this link are not from the US and don't have the points of references. The map is available for download but I find it easier to enlarge on the site.
Sketch map of the United States between 41 and 51 N. Lat. and 90 and 121 W. Long. showing the principal elements of terrain
Moving east to west you will find Pierre, which is Pierre SD on the Missouri River. Follow the Missouri first North and then West until you come to Ft Union which today it is Williston ND. It is at the confluence of two Rivers, the Missouri and the Yellowstone. This map from Wiki of the Missouri River basin will help when finding points.
On the De Smit map head straight south at the confluence. I am afraid that many of the tributaries they show flowing in I have been unable to find or the names have been changed but just before the river starts to go west on the map you will see the Powder, the Tongue, the Rosebud, Big Horn River and on the Big Horn you will find the Little Horn.
I had to search for the fort on the map but believe it might be Manuel's Fort aka Fort Raymond especially when referenced to the Lewis and Clark map.* I am unsure because the opposite sides of the river. But as we know rivers change courses and perhaps in the 33 years difference between the two maps forts may also have been moved. I also found that no one is quite sure where Manuel's Fort is.
*I should have started with the Lewis and Clark map first in this thread. It will be below.
