I read with surprise that many authors do not even agree with Vic, Custer's horse. Was he horse or mare?

Rollingthunder first, what name would you like us to call you? Rollingthunder, RT or something else. Second rollingthunder asked me this question in a private message and I spent the morning in a pleasant search for the answer. It actually took a bit for me to find a reliable source because it seems that people think for some reason that Commanche was Custer's horse and so many pictures labeled "Custer's horse" are actually Commanche. I did look at the picture of John Burkman posing with Custer's horses and dogs. It seems to me that Dandy was male though of course it is impossible to tell if he is gelded. To find a definitive answer about Vic, I referred to Libby Custer's Boots and Saddle . She relates a story about Custer that has this line "I made "Vic" gallop slowly over the divide, and when out of sight on the other side I put spurs to him and dashed through the low ground." I also found at that Vic was a Kentucky thoroughbred while Dandy was a Morgan--a very popular breed during the Civil War. The question I am interested in is would those horses have been gelded? It seems to me that a Cavalry man would not want a mount how might get loud and frisky because there was an in heat mare nearby, especially if that mare is the enemy's horse. I tend to read a lot of fiction and it seems that the hero always rides a magnificent stallion that he has trained to be a gentle and obedient beast. Would this image existed in an actual Cavalry officer when it came to his personal horse?

Hi Beth, I wish I could help you with your question about horse's, but I know as much about horse's then I do about sea urchins. But I guess that some of our equine founders will come to your aid.

In my misspent youth until my mid twenties I was a bit of a horse nerd and attended many horse events around the midwest. (though I could never be considered a rider). Its a much different world from the more practical world of horses like Steve would have.
