The 1876 election is probably the most controversial election in US history with long reaching consequences.
Rutherford B. Hayes was elected president after losing the popular vote to Democrat challenger Samuel J. Tilden. However Hayes won bitterly disputed electoral college vote after a Congressional commission awarded him twenty contested electoral votes. inc exchange for what was known as Compromise of 1877, in which the Democrats acquiesced to Hayes's election and Hayes ended all U.S. military involvement in Southern politics.
