As the story goes leading up to the battle Sitting Bull went up into the bluffs to pray, and had his vision.
Do we know where specifically this took place?

1-He was not alone in this prayer/vision session.
2- Not really, but overlooking the village.

Hi Crows nest,
I assume you mean Deer Medicine Rocks, a bizarre formation, I'm trying to put a photo up I took but the message board is not meeting me halfway here!

EPD,
That is a good grab and a great photo. But, I think what CN is referring to took place just prior to the battle across from the camp on the LBH and as I recall he was accompanied by Gall, maybe the day before. Have you visited the rocks, did you take the picture? I have seen it with more greenery, different time a year.
Regards, Tom

Yeah I'm talking a day or two before the battle. Just be a neat little tidbit to know, probably lost to time. Would be interesting if it had occurred on Calhoun or LSH hill wouldn't it. But I assume if it occurred on LSH, we would know that, as it would've been passed down as majorly prophetic.

Most probably Calhoun, but don't count out Weir area. I don't have that info at hand, I will attempt to remember, at another location. It may be mentioned in the Donohue book, "WRRR."

I think it was One Bull, gave a mention of this event. Where other than across the river is imprecise. However, Little Bighorn being a peice of string, one could knit together the following concoct. Tributes of small tocabbo pouches and willow bark would be left at burial sites and places of vision or prayer and it is given that SB did this on the hills overlooking the camp - the night before 7th Cavalry attacked. In accounts it seems that Four Horns wife or sister was dying or had died. Whether Hunkpapa or Minnieconjou - I am not sure. A son or grand son was Hona and he ran to warn of the soldier's approach when his son or younger brother was killed. That was Deeds. Given Four Horn's was a tribal leader with a family member killed at the start of the attack you could not really have found a better way to ensure that the Sioux stood and fought. Add to that the shooting of Sitting Bull's favorite horse and Renoactully did a pretty good job of getting attention and stirring a hornet's nest. Given various accounts of SB having a degree of poor mobility due to war wounds, he was kicked by one of the escaped ammunition mules when retrieving it from the river and the animal deserves a medal perhaps; then if he walked to the hill where he prayed to Wakan Tanka, it was not far and given location of the Hunkpapa camp - he was up the bluffs and possibly at a high point. Varnum - RCoI - He diverted from the 270676 advance to Custer Hill to look at stuff on a hill. It is in his testimony. There is more and it is all awkward stuff which leaves one with the gibberish I have produced above if you are clinically trained, forensic, or pedantic; but it's there amongst the rich and rewarding participant histor. Gordon Harper probably had quite a handle on the SB prayers and location of said. God was listening to him. SB nor Geordie. Cairn of rocks - Peter Thompson, on and on............. Be well.

For some reason when I have heard the story of Sitting Bull praying, I was always pictured it more on the bench than the bluff.

Regards Elwood, I hope that you are well. Are you local to the medicine rocks or was it a pilgrimage? Here is the source for Sitting Bull's prayer at LBH. D.H. Miller and Oscar One Bull. I bumped some of Stanley Vestal's stuff with OB one which is online at OU. link but it isn't the sort of stuff which military enthusiasts have time for. I look forward to your contributions. >>> Hold onto your horses. <<<
