Also since the War of 1812 was a part of the Napoleonic wars, I wouldn't mind if it goes broader than than 1812

Beth, I think I would be out numbered in any debate on this war, but yes you are correct it was part of the Napoleonic war with the French behind it.

I wonder if it seemed so at the time to most Americans. Now we can see the cause and effect of what lend up to the war but how was it viewed back then?

Beth, wars like the one against the States in 1812, would be something of nothing to the common English man, but the threat of Napoleon would be a concern as he was only across the channel and had one of the best armies in the world, well behind Britain of course.
What the British army was used as in many cases was a strong armed protection squad for the a small number of rich politicians and royals in Britain to just take over a country and rob it blind, but many other European countries did the same. It made no difference to the man in the street as he saw none of the riches which this country lifted under the barrel of a musket.
When I used to dabble in Napoleonic wargaming, I was amazed at the chocolate box uniforms of small nations like Hanover, Kingdom of Naples and Dutchy of Warsaw and many more.

The uniforms in England were chocolate box as well. I personally like the green rifle regiment that I am forgetting the name of. For years I have been trying to figure out what uniform my alleged great 4 times uniform would have worn however thanks to working on my family tree it suddenly dawned on my he would have been on the French side of battles, not one of the German armies.
I do have ancestors that fought on the US side as well.

Beth, one evening last summer I slept in a tree all night and all of a sudden it ''Dawned on me'' too
Here are the main components of the confederation of the Rhine, who were knocking around in 1812. Napoleon created these states after he took over the region now known as Germany. They didn't last long as the federation was formed in 1806 [after the Battle of Austerlitz] and collapsed in 1813 [after the Battle of Leipzig].
These are the main ones, but I think there was over thirty in all and these little nations not only had their own flag but their army had a their own uniform. Some still exist as regions, mainly in Germany.
Grand Duchy of Baden [Army Strength: 8000] Kingdom of Bavaria [Army Strength: 30.000] Grand Duchy of Berg [Army Strength: 5000] Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt [Army Strength: 4000] Principality of Regensburg [Army Strength: 4000] Kingdom of Saxony [Army Strength: 20.000] Kingdom of Westphalia [Army Strength: 25.000] Kingdom of Württemberg [Army Strength: 12.000] Grand Duchy of Würzburg [Army Strength: 2000]
Napoleon used these places to bulk up his army.
