Now you can't even believe what you see! I am crestfallen. I guess Mitch escaped the LBH and joined the Ute tribe. Never could trust French heritage!

We may be on the verge of solving the mystery of 'C' Troop.
Some interesting data on Bouyer, who died before ..... well rtm.... link
Many if ands and buts, but............ John S. Gray did his Bouyer book and as it published, he was giving a talk at LBH and, well..... the marker 33 identification became public. I long remember sitting down with that book and the fullness of my expectations being utterly crushed. Curley te scout was on a magic carpet. I fell about laughing and then worked out what Gray had done. I mean, how he did it. That's another story. I was never comfortable with the Bouyer image but that doesn't mean that Brininstool got it wrong, but, an awful lot of renaming images of Indians went on on. Brininstool met Curley who would certainly have yey or nay'd the photo but we don't know if Brininstool had Curley do confirmation. I'm not even sure that he was Catholic.
Sorry..... i'll cut it out.
Marker 33 might not be Bouyer. The Bouyer image bears considerable facial similarities with Lt. Porter. Just one of those things. It has been succinctly pointed up here, that this is the type of matter with which historians 'must' be circumspect and ultra conservative in avoiding notoriety. This Proboards idiom however, excels for discussion in informed and raw worts and all practice. Since the day that Benteen put pen to paper with his confusion as to the fate of Tom Custer's command - the theory has been rife and ripe as discussion became history. If Benteen could not work out what that Company did, with him stood looking at them smashed to pieces then....... I can do no more than but raise a toast to Thomas B. Marquis and everything that has flowed since.
I am around to pick up on the Rosebud thing but Rod Thomas's work has really brought things to life. For me any way. Porter's pistol was eventually 'found'.

Regarding Porter skin can tend to blacken when left out to dry and red man and white man could he confused, Idon't think that would happen in two or three days.
Crook was a master of logistics compared to some others of the day. He was found lacking in zeal , following the Rosebud, see my post in CCOI under "Aftermath" he did not do "jack" for nearly 50 days. His losses were not that great, he jut went into a shell and dallied.

I think that Crook should have kept active in some capacity, I don't knock him for not pursuing his attackers straight away but he was not beaten nor cleared from the field. I can't recall off hand how his supplies were shaping up, did his men use up all their ammo? I do know that his pack train was still intact further back to his rear, so he could have held the ground he fought for and brought his trains up into line.
But to be honest I really don't know enough about the ins and outs of the Rosebud battle to really have an opinion.
Tom, if this is in the wrong thread then I will move it. I know you have brought up Crook in another thread.

HR, If we want Britain to be up there with the big boys, then the armed forces needs funding, now as you may know Britain that due to borrowing, we owe billions of pounds to whoever lends use this money, and due to really cruel austerity we are cutting back on Schools, Hospitals and everything else, but we still send our fair share of cash abroad, most of this is needed in some places, but India who is a nuclear power and Pakistan who has its own space agency, come on what are we thinking of. We still send money to China for gods sake, 47 million in 2016 alone So if you want a strong military, good schools and hospitals, then kick there three in touch. For some reason China is missing from this list;

dwg Porter may have been decapitated. We will never know. There was such comment from Schneider, I think - 5th Infantry but a year or so post battle. The point of the Bouyer image research is that it isn't Bouyer in the image. Therefore the remains at marker 33 were wrongly identified. There are other and broader issues but, pftttt.... Porter bears pysical resemblances with the 'this was not Bouyer' image. Since the marker 33 remains are not those of Bouyer but the remains bore resemblance to the image, then the skull fragments might be Porter whose image resembles that which was supposed to be Bouyer. The skull fragments could be those of any of the 210 or so dead soldiers. 1
Yan Hmmm.... The Aid budget is a political tool and under pressure for a number of reasons such as sex for aid scandals. Aid is a political tool, do not doubt that, and the policy is .7% of something or other and probably the lowest of our GDP estimates. So, the worse we do in the market then the less we pay. Ahem! It's a political football and very useful tool. I agree that it is dumber than selling sand to the Saudi's to be giving China handouts. There's not a lot we can do since it makes sense to the politicians. They argue for a living. The financial disaster of 2008 onwards is not over by a long chalk and we are poorer because of it and poorer because of growing population.
Crook had wounded and that was an issue after the Reynold's fight at Powder River. Crook never explained himself, which is worrying and it crossed my mind that besides replenishing supplies and ammo; he just sat out the Centennial. Didn't want to upset the apple cart and become a Custer - although Custer hadn't happened yet.
1 What I just did here, is a Shipley. A John S. Gray who piled fact upon fact upon supposition and slight of hand, with a rythm of rhyme that is enjoyable - if you are interested in the topic. You come away from it entirely befuddled. This is because the brain can only cope with a limited number of conscious inputs and these include the act of sitting, reading, flipping pages, carrying a train of thought and trying to assess implication while your nose is itchy and someone in the kitchen is tenerizing steak and a barbeque is burning. Most people overload at around nine. Beth might disagree the number.....

Been reading some of the older threads. Don't have the Gray book with me but . . . Wasn't the photo/bone fragments match only part of it? Weren't they (fragments) identified as mixed race? Jaw had evidence of heavy pipe smoking. Other archeology. Photo isn't Bouyer evidently but has it been determined that bones definitely aren't? Marker could still be correct?
