Part of Mary's caution is because I was already planning to head north in November with hubby, kid 2 and the dog. I won't be sure though if hubby gets the vacation time for a bit. I may approach him about the idea of taking a wide swing up via Mississippi but I will warn you it would be a very hard sell-not because he isn't willing to explore something new but we have so much family in Iowa that involves covering the state from the Des Moines area to Ames to Burlington with points inbetween. We also have to work the trip to fit into Kid 2's school break and somehow pick up Kid 1 on her school break.

While baby sitting my 2 granddaughters, ages 8 and 9, we spent 3 1/2 hours at the library this morning. While they listened to story time, playing computer games and reading, I found a new book Undefeated: Jim Thorpe and the Carlisle Indian School Football Team by Steve Sheinkin.
The author discusses the use and misuse of the Indian athletes by Coach Pop Warner and the school's administration. Not only were all the students striped of their ancestry but were exploited to make money for the school. Warner had them playing 3 games within 8 days as well as promotional events.
I was unaware that athletes back in 1890 to 1918 were used as chattle as they are today by major football schools.
I highly recommend this book if you are curious as to the extent the US government went to to destroy a people, a culture a way of life. Sad very sad. Regards Dave

You have to remember though that the US Government thought they were acting on sound moral principles and it is only with time that we can fully see the damage. I am not making an excuse for what happened then, more wondering what we will someday find are the costs to things that have happened in our post WWII generation that will be viewed by the generations in the future as so morally wrong.
It seems like every generation has something that is based on what seemed like a good idea at the time that will come back to bite in the end.

Posted over on the books thread, read a couple books on Carlisle football team including “The Real All-Americans “. While I don’t necessarily disagree with the posts here, was wrong to attempt to eliminate all Indian culture (only an attempt, didn’t happen, even at Carlisle), it has to be looked at in perspective. Pratt, founder of Carlisle, had served out west in Texas and Oklahoma after the CW. He had seen the reservation system up close, spoke out against it til the day he died. He believed the Indians could be educated and in fact it was the only way they could survive. Of course anytime the feds get involved in a program it gets fouled up, runs inefficiently. No surprise. But for every wrong that Carlisle or like schools did, there was some Indian who credited the program with saving them. Many stated and wrote that if not for Carlisle, they would have ended up just another drunk, poor, starving Indian on the reservation. I believe this has been missed. I don’t deny any cruelties that existed, its just that the federally run reservation program was no Valhalla. An alternative had to be undertaken.

I basically concur with your views Mister E, and those of Beth immediately above your own.
It would have been a better question for Dave to have asked is --- Why are athletes used as chattel? All schools from Ding Dong School to Harvard, Stanford, and Yale primarily exist to educate. not pimping for funds by using any form of Gladiatorial Games in any sport from football to jock sniffing. The answer is quite simple really. Fund the goddamned schools like you understand that the future of our country depends upon how well these students are educated and not how far they can throw a forward pass. Deemphasize sports. and put your support behind learning. If you feel you must have intercollegiate competition start a chess league and let them learn about life and how to live in the real world.
Now all this seems harsh, and I suspect there will be many here that think I have gone completely round the bend, because athletic competition does add to a person's value, but that value is not in ability, but in learning teamwork. We don't do that very well either. Deemphasize sports. Emphasize learning, all sorts of learning. If you must have sports events use the sport the way it was meant to be, not a means to redecorate the whorehouse.
There was once a defensive lineman who played for my beloved Washington Redskins. He was a graduate of Oklahoma State College. When he played for the Redskins he won two Super Bowl Rings but he could neither read nor write. He was thrown out of the NFL twice for narcotics. Those people who were responsible for this type of treatment of a human being should expect no mercy from Saint Peter. He was their street whore for the purpose of making money. The shame is theirs not his.

I’d blame the school itself too, not just his coaches. They are/were all culpable. And dont you mean the Washington COMMANDERS?

1. Yes
2a. Not at all.
2b. It's a fault of the American Culture that values the jock strap more than a well educated mind. We are all to blame in some measure.
3. NO, A THOUSAND TIMES NO. I mean the Washington Redskins. If the Redskins logo was racist, so then is the image on the Indian Head Nickel. They are the same. I would say the same thing about the Cleveland Indians, and the Atlanta Braves. In the latter two cases the logos were/are too cartoonish for my taste, but the names Indians and Braves are not in any way racist or offending. There are limits to political correctness, and I would never intentionally offend anyone because of race, color, creed, or religion. I think intent should be looked at. If the intent is to offend, it is offensive. No intent, no offense. Now, with that being said, I will gladly offend any treasonous son of a bitch who comes my way. I will call someone stupid when they have shown by their stupidity it is called for. I will speak against injustice in any form, and I do not suffer fools gladly or otherwise.

Yes, agree with you in the PC/mascot naming. Hope I didn’t get your blood pressure up too high.
That old Redskin-Cowboys rivalry was one of sports best. Sadly, just not the same anymore. Partly because of the characters, players involved. Partly because the games were usually vital, playoff spot or division title on the line.
You still follow Washington?

I have followed Washington since Sammy Baugh was the Redskins Quarterback and I was about 7. Actually saw Baugh play at old Griffith Stadium, which was a horrible venue for football. Being away from DC prevents me from seeing many games, but I do watch them when they come my way.
My blood pressure is always high, That's why I take pills every morning and evening. I'm living on borrowed time having had two heart attacks and cancer, but I'll be damned if that is going to stop me from living my life my way and to the fullest.
