I can not believe that the 4th is just a few days away. Where has the first half of the summer gone?

Sorry in intercede on your July 4th stuff as I know how important it is to you all, but Canada also celebrates its 150th anniversary today, and seeing that they wanted to be loyal to the mother country and all its benefits, I wanted to share with you this link, which is very interesting. linkI hope you all enjoy yourselves on the 4th of July, as I will hopefully be enjoying myself on the 29th July.

Cool information Ian. The company Steve works for has given all North American employees both the 3rd and the 4th to celebrate both Canada Day and the 4th to celebrate Canada's sesquicentennial. Usually you only get the 1st or the 4th off depending on which country you live in.

Beth, I guessed you noticed that the stately home in that link was used to film Downton Abbey?
I too love these types of buildings and here am I checking the stocks and shares at my club [the Diogenes club] I have just ordered a large cognac and Ladbrook the waiter is on his way as the photo was taken.

I always knew those Englishman who came out of the sun would hit the lounge and order Gin and Tonics while reading the paper. Probably checking up on his stocks! Lazy guys just lolling around while real hard working men as myself are out chasing golf balls and making homes for small rodents with each swing digging out great gouges of dirt! Regards Dave

Dave, there was a lovely golf course just across the grounds of that hall, I was watching the golfers taking their shots from about 200-300 yards away while I was drinking my Pimms on the terrace.

Yan, That photo makes me jealous. Why didn't you order a drink for all of us while you were at it? My wife loved Downton Abbey and wants to come over there to see highclear and some of the places used in the series.

I first learned about Highclere Castle when the Earl of Carnarvon was funding the expedition that discovered King Tutankhamun. The story of his dying from an infected mosquito bite that he nipped shaving really caught my eye and lead to my studying Egyptology as a youngster and young adult. The closest example of a personal home so large I have visited is Biltmore Estate. Regards Dave

Biltmore takes every English manor house and tries to outdo them and then adds American crass. The place is HUGE. BTW there actually is a true English Manor house--in Iowa. salisburyhouse.org/
