This is my 2nd great grandfather on my father's side. He is listed as a Civil War veteran but it is rather a difficult history to share because his service as a Private was with the 3rd Colorado Cavalry Regiment, Company B, infamously involved in the Sand Creek Massacre. If you look for the rosters of his service there are 3 different spellings of his name, however I have traced his widow's pension back to the 3rd. I can find that his company was formed at Old Fort Luptin and was commanded by Captain/Major Hal Sayr. Sayr is listed under both ranks, I suspect one is his regular service and the later with the 3rd Colorado Cav. Family history according to an Ancestory.com story is: Mr. xxxxx has a very creditable military record and is entitled to honor as one of the defenders of the Union in the crisis of the '60s. From 1860 to 1865 he was in the Rocky mountains, where he engaged in mining for some time, and also served in the regular army. He enlisted in the Third Colorado Cavalry and He enlisted in the Third Colorado Cavalry and served for nine months in the Civil war toward the close of the conflict. Previously he had been detailed to protect the stages and emigrant trains crossing to the far west. I have redacted his name because many of my family seem to be unaware of the history of his regiment. Sometimes when you go searching around in family trees you come across total surprises, I had never once heard that 2 of my dad's great grandfathers fought in the Civil War. The other died at Shiloh.

Great stuff Beth, you are luck to have such information and family history at your finger tips. My eldest sister did our family tree, but god bless her, she is not really interested in the military side of things. Now if she would have come across any military records in her research and alerted me, then I would have chased them up using the internet, especially if she had a regimental name. I found this some time back, and my sister had info on the guy, but because she was not looking at it from a military aspect, she just listed him as a relation, but I have never heard of him and any adventures he may have had; McCARTHY_THOMAS.pdf (127.72 KB)

Beth Do you have any information as to your GG Grandfather's actions at the battle? He may not have participated in the killing and mutilations of the women and children as not everyone was as depraved as Chivington and his minions. As the old adage says "we can't pick our relations." Regards Dave

Ian send me that PDF as an attachement and I can get it in a form we can open, or you probably can use postimage. I personally am uncomfortable downloading PDFs directly to my computer.
Dave, no I don't have the information. His involvement in Sand Creak is something I discovered after we formed this group. I just haven't read much on Sand Creek but hope to someday. The information I have gathered has been through other sources and not through family history. Just last night I found a major document on 3fold showing his enlistment.
Does anyone else know if they have a family veteran who fought in what we call the Indian Wars?
