Just been reading about the Long Range desert Group [or LRDG for short]. Now as all of you know this small unit distinguished itself in North Africa and in the whole of the desert campaign suffered 16 KIA and 24 MIA and POWs.
I always wondered what happened to this formation after the desert campaign, and I found out that they were still active and served in the Greek Islands, Yugoslavia, Albania and Italy. It was on active service in Greece that unit suffered the most casualties. A raid on the Island of Levitas cost them 41 KIA. Later on the Island of Leros, their commander Colonel Jake Easonsmith was killed and fifty of his men captured.
There were some success stories and one of them was when a patrol spent seventeen days on a German held Island called Naxos, this Island was garrisoned by 650 men and the LRDG managed to evade capture and brought back valuable information on German shipping in the area.
After VE Day, the LRDG were eligible for service in the far east, but were ordered to stand down and the unit was disbanded in 1945.

Major General David Lloyd Owen's "Long Range Desert Group 1940-1945 - Providence Their Guide" is the best book ever in my opinion on the LRDG. I would think it a must have for you Ian
I was always a big fan of Popski's Private Army, another LRDG - SAS type unit

ADMIN NOTE: I am leaving the following posts intact because it illustrates several points common with message boards. First we may all speak English but not all terms we use are the same nor are all events expressed in the same manner. Such misunderstandings can lead down a nasty path. It doesn't matter if it is because a distance across the ocean or even in the US North to South, East to West. We have different ways to express the same things. When we see someone expressing something not in a way we consider correct, the answer is not to be defensive but instead to ask why the other person has used that term.
The second point is that when you have a common core of interests which has developed into friendships. It is possible no matter how much we disagree to take a step back, breathe, and then remember sometimes being right isn't important, it is coming to a mutual understanding then moving on. I will be putting this message at both the beginning and end of this group of messages..

Military and civilian decorations, like the Victoria Cross, The Medal of Honor, and The George Cross are not won like you win a Teddy Bear at a carnival. They are awarded by Queen and Country for valor under fire, and should be treated with the utmost respect, and should not be cheapened by the word won. Words and how they are used matters..

If you mean the head line of the link once you open it, well take it up with them. If you mean my use of the word 'winner' well I was just using their words, but the emphasis was for one of our own and respect for his memory, if I offended you personally well okay.

I did not open the link yet. I was referring to your use of the word "winner". I have no ability to challenge that word used in this context by someone writing in the link. I do have the ability to challenge your using the word. This is not the first time we have had this discussion. The words win, winner, won, are totally inappropriate when you are speaking of awards presented to any nations most valiant. Curb you popular civilian instincts and show respect where respect is both warranted and mandated.
Now that I have read the link the newspaper used the word "won" in the headline, and the word "awarded" twice in the story itself.
Don't make excuses. You alone are responsible for the words you use.

well seeing that you have not bothered to open it yet and you wrote that post nearly an hour ago shows less respect to a VC recipient then me using the words winner.

Bull shit and you may quote that if you wish.
I did not need to open it to address your words did I?
You want to play soldier here, and that's fine, but you will never no matter how much you stop here and play, be one, or think like one, or hold dear those things that are precious to us.

In fact, I would have changed my post in a heart beat around 18 months ago, last thing I would have wanted to do was upset you. I would change it now if it offended any of the other founders on OUR SITE if they objected to the term. I would do it for them out of friendship, but to be honest you are not worthy of my friendship.

I know you do not like to be corrected, and you think any correction is a personal attack against you. You think of yourself as being inferior, which is not a valid assumption, but still your problem. There is a sure fire way to avoid being corrected. Do it right the first time. Don't write until you insure you are right. Don't present something until you have thoroughly examined what you intend to say, and look at it from both the point of the writer (yourself) and your audience.
That post above is without doubt the most petty I have seen in a very long time. Eighteen months ago you would have corrected it. You would change it now if anyone else objected to it. But at this time you would not or will not change it because it is offensive to me. I don't care about you offending me. I care about you offending your fellow countrymen by disrespecting what they have done, and in some cases died for to insure that your silly deplorable ass lives free, so you may have the freedom to disrespect them.
