Ed Bearrs was a unique individual as he was a warrior, explorer, researcher and scholar. He perosnally amassed all of the artillery reports in the Official Records of the Rebellion, Series 1, Volume X, Part 1 from the Battle of Shiloih then composed a 40 plus page report enumerating the rounds fired, type of cannons and number along with casualty reports for each battery that participated in the battle. All of this was done on his own time and was never published. I got a copy from a Park Ranger.
His story of the discovery and recovery of the USS Cairo was a masterpiece and would have been the most noteable accomplishemnt of anyone but not Ed Bearrs!
His historic study The Campaign for Vicksburg: I Vicksburg Is the Key, II Grant Strikes a Fatal Blow, III Unvexed to the Sea (3 volume set) is the ultimate word on Vicksburg and its participants!
What a man. Regards David

Mosby did nothing more than Rogers, or Marion. He was a country lawyer, and such men, given that they do not submit to conventionality always do well against the blockheads that cannot think outside the confines of a West Point textbook. There is a name for those who study war and play fair - loser. If you studied it, I mean really studied it, you would know never to play fair
The Indians thinking was quite conventional - for them.
The key word used in your post above is ADAPT.
If you adapt like, Miles and Crook, to the conditions present in the battle space, and adjust your thinking to the here and now, not the then and gone, you will eventually achieve success.
If you anticipate anything, and base your plans on that anticipation alone, you will get the shit kicked out of you and deservedly so.
You fight the fight you are given, where it is given, and with everything you have been given.
The difference between envision and occurred is reality. You either grasp reality or you die.
It is a fundamental tenant of our faith that the wise soldier knows about thinking, shooting, and marching, before the band plays too loud. You stay alive longer that way. Our Drill Instructors at MCRD San Diego told us that if we ever found ourselves in a fair fight, it was because our tactics SUCKED.
Been busy as a bee lately. Looks like my dream of owning my own Dive Charter Biz is really gonna happen. I can't believe it. Hope this finds everyone well. Aloha,
Duane

Tactics never suck Duane. It is the choice of tactics that may or may not suck. Never fighting fair is something that should be confined to the battlefield where your life and the lives of those in your charge are at stake. All other human dealings MUST be based on the sound moral principles of fairness, square dealing, mercy, and humility.
I wish you well in fulfilling your dream.
Speaking for myself, I (we) are quite well, and continue to act in a prudent manner during these trying times. I became a great grandfather four months ago. My grandson has a better than even chance of being admitted to William and Mary this coming Fall. We will find out for sure on the 15th. My oldest granddaughter moved into her own apartment a week ago. It looks like my son in law will be home from Afghanistan in a couple of months, and my Christmas shopping is done.

I think they meant that our choice of tactics sucked. It was hard to tell, they yelled alot. Glad to hear your family is well and you appear to have you Sierra One Bravo..... Best of luck to you Sir. Aloha,
Duane.

I am sure that was their meaning. The larger point, and it is directly pertaining to the subject we most discuss here, is that our choices matter, just like Custer's choices mattered. The problem is that choices are hard. We must be risk takers (as you are with your boat) and conservative at the same time. We must be conservators of life, while at the same time not afraid to expend life, if the expenditure is consistent with a worthy goal.
This shit, just like life itself, is hard stuff, and no short verbal expression can do the hardness justice. The settling of the mind, the victory attained before the first shot is fired, is the essence of conflict, at any level.
