More trivia, how many knew that Varnum was wounded during the battle or that he shared Charlie Reynolds last drink with him.
" I felt pain in both legs at once, and thought for a second I had lost both lags. I got a bullet through one calf, and as my foot was up, while I was running the other went down my leg cutting the yellow strip off my trousers and denting my boot over my ankle bone. It did not touch my person, but acted like a blow on my ankle bone and the foot swelled up, turned black and blue and was really the worst wound of the two. These wounds were inflicted during the Benteen charge.
"Fred Gerard had a half pint flask of whiskey and , let's take a drink. I may be our last. It was the last for poor Charlie Reynolds."
The above quotes come from "Custer's Chief of Scouts"(The Reminiscences of Charles A. Varnum)
