The British army adopted the .303 (7.7x56) in 1889 and originally came from a Swiss designer called Major Rubin, it was initially developed as a tapered wall cartridge with a crimped driving band, but this was soon changed to a bottleneck case.
The Japanese also used a 7.7mm round Arisaka (7.7x58), this was late coming and it was 1939 before they issued it to the troops, it too was a version of the Spitzer.
