I would personally rank "The Oxbow Incident" much higher than 36th.

I would rate the Magnificent Seven second only to The Searchers.
I did not go through the entire list, but a couple of thoughts come to mind. Liberty Valance should be higher I think, and the Selleck and Elliott westerns made for Turner, which are feature length films in their own right such as Monte Walsh, Crossfire Trail, Quigley Down Under, deserve a place on this list. They were first rate, and both of those primary actors just as good as any that have come before, including Wayne, Eastwood, and Fonda.

If you want to see a bad western well here is one I saw a few weeks back. Check out the link and look at the cast and who they play, surly all these iconic men of the American west would not be together in the same town. linkAny movie which contains a bad guy named "Blackjack Ketchum" has got to be bad, any way Wallander is back with a new series and a new series of Top Gear too, so things are not half bad.

Interesting list. Of course what makes a good movie can be very subjective so my own list would be different. It does make you think though about the difference between what makes a great movie and one that you just personally enjoy.

Any movie that stars George Montgomery, is a blight on humanity, and to be avoided at all cost, including risk of life and limb.
I hate to burst you bubble old friend but Thomas E. "Blackjack" Ketchum was as real as his mommy and daddy could make him, and very much alive, until that unfortunate episode involving a noose occurred.
Our western adventure also included such real personages as Black Bart, and Three Legged Willie.

I had to look up George Montgomery and it seems that even though he has a long list of movies, the only one I have ever managed or remember seeing was the Battle of the Bulge.
I also had to look up Three Legged Willie and I'm not sure if I am relieved or disappointed on the origin of his moniker.

Why Beth I am shocked as to your thought about Ole Three Legged Willie!
Lonesome Dove has to be rated the second greatest after The Searchers and where is Conagher listed? Sam Elliott's finest effort! Regards Dave

Actually I had heard of him before especially since I live yards from the Williamson County line. I just occasionally experience CRS syndrome (Can't Remember Sh--stuff). There is a famous sideshow freak known as the Three Legged Man

I don't know if worse is the right word. Cult classic perhaps? It is extremely different.

I don't know if worse is the right word. Cult classic perhaps? It is extremely different. It is a bad movie. The lead actor eventually played the dwarf in High Plains Drifter but much of the cast would end up as Munchkins a year later and I believe not much else.

You guys have got to see this western; linkI saw this one afternoon years ago, it was on one of the secondary channels, and I thought my god what is Fonda doing in this load of rubbish, it also has a well over the top performance by Aldo Ray, which actually made me laugh. Yan.

What is Fonda doing - Making money.
I think Fonda's best westerns were with John Ford's direction. My Darling Clementine and Fort Apache. Fonda had a falling out with Ford during the shooting of Mister Roberts, and I understand the two never spoke or at least socialized again. Fonda would go on to make more movies, and a few more westerns among them, but the westerns were not up to the Ford standard, and hence rubbish.

True even Olivier made what he called "his bread and butter" films. Apparently John Ford could be a horrible person and I recall John Wayne saying to his eldest son, don't take too much notice of uncle John (Ford) and don't take it personnel, as you can see how he treats your uncle Ward (Bond).
