You don't have to worry about the millions of Americans who use a gun correctly. It's the handful of people who probably shouldn't have access to one due to mental health issues that present the problem.
On the other hand I belong to our neighborhood's mailing list. Last Friday about 11 PM there was a series of pop, pop, pops and a boom. It's a sound I am very familiar with because we have a neighbor about a block away who routinely sets off fireworks to celebrate I don't know how many events in their lives. We routinely have short fireworks displays I don't know how many times a year and with Christmas and New Years approaching they will grow more frequent. (They celebrate the 4th for weeks on either side of the date).
Within five minutes of the firecrackers followed by a bottle rocket ended, the mailing list was full of people who had grabbed their guns and was wondering where the shooting was so they could come to the aid. There were also reports of seeing kids running down a certain street wearing hoodies (which is like saying teens in jeans, it is such a common garment). Finally before a posse was mounted, someone reported they had seen the bottle rocket and reminded people wasn't uncommon to have these impromptu displays.
(we have another neighbor who routinely fires her gun at skunks, despite being warned by police that she can't do that. Who knows what chaos will reign the next time she spots one.)

Just wait till she hits one and the chaos will reign. The odor has a tendency to waft everywhere and plus those damn armadillos are not far behind. Global warming is a mere pain compared to those 'dillos and the fire ants. Thank you South America! Regards Dave

Would you believe I haven't seen an armadillo since I've been here--dead or alive. I can't make the same claim about fire ants.

I have had the little sobs in my yard once this year. I was going to start staking out the front yard with my 12 gauge and shoot 'em. But my neighbor ran over the little darling and so I have not had to deal with one lately. I do see them along the highway once or twice a month casualties of their self defense mode of jumping high into the oil pan of the vehicle. As to the ants I use that white powder, can't think of the name, that really stinks but kills them quickly. Regards Dave

The only live armadillo I have ever seen was an armadillo racing event that was staged at a convention I went to in Houston in '96. I've seen plenty dead in Florida and points south but none in since we reached Texas 4 years ago. I can understand them not being in our neighborhood, we are pretty much sitting on limestone with only a couple inches of soil. We also have a very healthy coyote population that has evidently dining on feral cats. Several neighbors have reported seeing them carrying off cats.
I know what you mean about the white powder. I can't remember the name but know the package when I see it in Lowes. I also routinely use a spreadable ant bait and an ant spray around the foundation because they seem to occasionally get into the house.

I bet you have had that tune in your head all day, the best one Christie did was "Avenues and Ally Ways" which was the theme tune to the British TV drama "the protectors" starring your own Robert Vaughn, how many of you remember that one, or the Persuaders starring Tony Curtis and Roger Moore.

I'll have to put it on my youtube list. Right now I have been listening to 60's-70's folk/pop and stumbled across the Seekers. I had heard Georgy Girl before but had no idea they had so many hits.

Skunks are rabies carriers and a lot of them have rabies in Arizona. Discharging a firearm at a skunk would have to be done in an unsafe manner to be a violation in most cases. Inside city limits could be a different issue but our state law prohibits towns and cities from regulating hunting. Most of our metro areas have closed seasons or archery only hunts.
A suppressed .22 would be the way to go using subsonic ammunition.
