I am currently reading this book and highly recommend it. In the current chapter I am on it's just after Custer's stay in Texas and mentions a Thomas Nast cartoon of a masquerade ball that Custer attended and was pictured (in his costume) in. The ball was full of all sorts of movers and shakers and powers that be in New York. Custer is in the left edge of the central cartoon featuring the full ball scene. He is dressed in a 'devil' costume. I was able to dig around a bit and find it and thought others might be interested in seeing it. Nast cartoon
Libbie wasn't at the ball because she was home with her dying father.
