Was there a great deal of difference in the appearance of the 7 seven bands of the Lakota? Could an Ogala be distinguished from a Sans Arc? Did the Cheyenne dress differently from the Sioux and did the Northern Cheyenne dress differently than the Southern Cheyenne? I know the Crow wore their hair in a pompadour but have not read or heard much about style of dressing among the bands and/or tribes. Regards Dave

I know that I when watching Antique Roadshow they are always able to identity items to the tribes by such things as the colors used in beading, the dyes and styles. I know that the Shoshone were divided into different band which were identified by their diet--sheepeaters and fisheaters come to mind quickly--plus each band had very different lifestyles because of their main food source. Yan. We have an American version but there is channel that does carry the UK one but they practically are antiques themselves they are so old. I do watch Great British Bake off but we are several season's behind. Yes we get Dr. Who--on BBC America--which shows a lot of Star Trek Next Generation so I suspect programs flow both ways.

Yes they do Beth, I was brought up on US TV shows I could name them all but I would run out of space, but I guess the earliest show would be sergeant Bilko and all the 1960s stuff that followed, I still have all the episodes of Texas Rising to get through so I hope they are good.
I recall when I was about 10 or 11, my dad owned a pub and he was one of the first in the town to install a colour TV for the customers, while we the family upstairs in the living quarters had to make do with a black and white job, the local kids used to try and see through the frosted glass windows and get a glimpse of the screen, but I had it all weighed up and when the Pub closed between 3pm and 7pm I used to sneak down stairs and watch my favourite TV shows in colour, I still remember watching Star Trek in colour for the very first time, the episode was called “Arena” were Kirk fought a lizard man, great times.

Tom Thank you so much for the photos. I am sure the Indians could id which tribe or band a person was from but wonder about the whites. Regards Dave

I suspect those who had reason to know one tribe from another could--like if you live in between a non hostile tribe and hostiles but I suspect the great majority of Americans lumped them all into one. Kind of like Asian faces--some people just say 'they all look alike' and don't see that they look very different.

I noticed that when the Rees came upon Hawk's body, they looked at his face and stated, "It's a Pawnee boy." I know this is fiction but I thought this went along with NA recognizing each other by different looks. I have a friend that is married to a Lakota Sioux. I will pass on your question the next time I talk to her.

If you look at some of the old photographs you can see there are differences. Have you ever read Tony Hillerman's books-they are fiction but he seems know his stuff which it comes to Navajo culture--he would even describe a difference it body types between some Navajo families over others. I remember one was a Tuba City body which was low and round compared to the other type that was tall and lean.
There is of course a difference in costume and hair, like the men in the Crow tribe and their upswept bangs into a pompadour. I have read that braids were often very distinctive though perhaps we miss the differences. I have been trying to think of the name of the photographer who tried to capture pictures of the tribes in their traditional garb before the old traditions were wiped away. I will have to google more for it.
