Tom I read this thesis and I too loved the winter photos. The author presents some interesting comparisons of major army defeats versus the Little Big Horn battle such as St. Claire’s loss in 1791 and the Dade massacre in 1835. The army was slow to change tactics and learn from past defeats. He has eschewed the describing of the battle but rather focuses on Custer's decisions and what resulted. The part I enjoyed the most was he described what military processes were used to judge Custer's decisions and actions.
A book I recently acquired Last in Their Class: Custer, Pickett and the Goats of West Point by James S. Robbins discusses the painful slow and reluctant curriculum changes at West Point after these defeats and cadets were graduated with no training or knowledge to fight a war other than in the Napoleonic mode . I recommend Robbins book. Regards Dave

That was an interesting read--thanks for sharing it. I appreciated the list of WP's curriculum. It seems that at that time it was more about nation building than nation defending.
