Was going thru some of my Dad’s books the other day, he passed away in 2000. I saw a book that looked quite old, interesting I thought. The name was Tenting on the Plains, for all I knew it was a book on camping. Turns out it was Libbie Custer’s book about their time in Texas and Kansas, prior to LBH. Book written in 1887, this particular book’s copyright is 1893. Anyone read this? I have leafed thru it a bit, read a few pages. The book is old and care has to be taken while turning the pages. Reviews on Amazon, (book has been reprinted often evidently) are quite good. I know she was quite favorable towards her husband in her writings. Just wanted to know if anyones read it.

Nor I. Saying that she was quite favorable toward her husband is a bit of an understatement though. More like a fabricator of tall tales. If it is like some of her other work it should have been published by Marvel Comics instead of some more reputable house. Libbie Custer was a scoundrel in a long skirt. A typical Mrs. Colonel or Mrs. General, and I utterly despise that type who wear and profit from their husbands rank and/or position.

Nor I. Saying that she was quite favorable toward her husband is a bit of an understatement though. Well, I was simply being diplomatic in my wording. Yes, I have read how she defended him til the day she died, picking what evidence she wanted to and disregarding all others. I'm not planning on reading the book cover to cover, just skimming thru a bit. It is, I think interesting for what it is, journal of life on military posts in 1860's-70's. I don't lay any other stock in it. Not putting it in the recommended column.

You, I fear will find more interesting stuff in Mrs. Grierson's (10th Cavalry) cookbook of assembled recipes accumulated while following the guidon. One of my favorites is apple pie made without apples. Actually tried it and its not bad. Picked it up for the Mrs. when I stopped at Fort Riley on my way to Colorado back in 91. Upon getting it about a month later when we again drove west with three cats, the furniture, and her of course, she said - "They do have grocery stores in Colorado, don't they". I'm not at all sure she was kidding.

Well Chuck. That time in 1991 was our unknown closet approach. I returned to FRK from CA in August 1991 and left in DEC 1992 for Waco. (Sigh) then Birmingham - Fort Polk - Miami - Bryan-College Station - Merritt Island.

Passed through Riley on 30 May of 91. The division was just then returning from the desert. Stayed on main post so I did not get out to Custer Hill.

Well that's funny. I returned to FRK on about 10 may. Just in time for daughter #2s Birthday.
