In response to the request here is a graphic view of how I see the final phases of Custer's fight at the Northern end of the battlefield.
I am of the opinion he took all 5 companies with him to the Northern Valley.
How they got there is a question to be further debated.
This first map shows Custer's command in blue. In red there is:-
To the South the Sioux fight in the valley with Reno. The Sioux have (by all accounts) formed their usual half moon formation after rounding Reno's left flank.
In the Northern Valley the Cheyenne have (by accounts) halted Custer short of the river and then with growing numbers, started rounding Custer's right flank to form the same traditional half moon formation. Wolf Tooth and a number of others (by accounts) are already on Battle Ridge. Custer will very soon decide that he needs to leave the valley and move back to the higher ground. Ian will post the map. Thanks Ian!
Cheers

Hi Mac
I am quite confident that Custer split the main body as they entered MTC. The .45-70 cases found in the drainage leading up to Luce place soldiers there. The only direction you can fire from there is toward the north fork of MTC. From there they reach the top (Luce) and continue north across Nye Cartwright. They are engaged from the east, west, and the south leaving north open. As they cross Deep Coulee Wolf Tooth comes into contact.
The Indians from the south and east are a returning Cheyenne hunting party. The Indians from the west are from the Big Village. There is a 500 yard space from NC to Deep Coulee where there is very little cases found. There was a dead soldier and horse carcasses found before they crossed Deep Coulee.
Some of the Indian accounts require occupation of different locations simultaneously. The split is consistent with those accounts.
Regards
Steve

Three stayed somewhat north and two went somewhat south, and converged near Calhoun Hill. Someone went north toward D. It could be any number from 2-5. I am not convinced there is evidence they went that far, apparent lack of opposition from the front or rear, and I think the timing is wrong. Secret knowledge, Unnamed sources, concealment of evidence, and lack of precision in describing locations by not using grid coordinates or azimuth and distance from a know point doesn't count toward proof.

Mac asked me to post up some maps for him, the maps never arrived in my email box, since then I have asked people to email me and their messages are stuck in a que, I have no idea what has caused this and I am not in the habit of letting Mac down, so I have asked him if we could find an alternative way of getting those maps to me.
