Earlier and elsewhere I mentioned Pickett's Charge, and remembered that the Battle of Franklin was considered the Pickett's Charge of the west. I knew/remembered it was a debacle. So I decided to revisit, this is another excellent example poorly executed of frontal assaults failing against dug in troops. The result massive casualties and loss of life.
In my reading it appears that this would be a well preserved visit and would be a great side trip for those visiting Nashville.
Regards, Tom

Tom I had the opportunity a few weeks ago to visit Murfreesboro, TN (site of Stones River Battlefield) and Franklin. Sadly the vast majority of the Franklin Battlefield has been built over and has disappeared into urban sprawl. General Hood's attempt to smash General Schofield's Army of the Ohio against the Harpeth River was ill prepared and poorly supported withonly1 battery available to support the infantry attack.
The Confederates lost about 1,750 KIA and 5,500 WIA and MIA. The estimated number of soldiers Hood sent against the Federals was about 20,000 thus establishing a loss of 36%! Among the Southern dead were 6 general officers. Regards Dave

Hood was the best division commander in the Army of Northern Virginia, and the worst Army commander in the Confederacy, unless, of course, you consider Bragg and Beauregard, who were so bad that one would think they were on the Federal payroll.
