A start for you Beth. www.mprnews.org/story/2009/02/02/whitehorseamericanindian.si.edu/sites/1/files/pdf/education/poster_lone_dog_final.pdfBeth, while a visit to the battlefield is beneficial, the relationships developed in the surrounding areas are the real benefit. Meeting individuals who had family involved or spending time with Dull Knife's GG Granddaughter and the rest of the staff at Dull Knife College in Lame Deer is a reward in and of itself. Visiting Pine Ridge, Cheyenne River Rez, and Standing Rock is the real learning experience. I hope Steve gets the opportunity for Cheyenne River next year and maybe Wind River for both of us. Steve and I need to plan ahead for contacts to make the visits rewarding, maybe the buddy he alludes to can help us set it up. Regards, Tom

Thank you. i am convinced that their art and stories are some of the best sources of what happened that day. They are the stories of the eye witnesses.

Beth, et al. The artwork of the American Indian may not be the only place to look for additional information about the battle, from the winner's perspective. The artwork of David Humphreys Miller lends not only terrific art but short versions of his interviews with the survivors. Attached you will find portraits 70 survivors painted and interviewed in the 1930's and 40's. Some of these folks lived on into the 1950's, unlike the over two hundred who chowed down on the famous "Death Burger." Many of the Cheyenne depicted below lived in Busby, MT, interestingly enough where Gordon Harper chose to reside while compiling much of the information for his book, " The Fights on the Little Horn." Steve and I have had the opportunity and pleasure to meet some of the descendants of some of the survivors. Enjoy the download below, scroll down the page to the portraits. If you click on the portrait you can see short versions of the interviews. Regards, Tom davidhumphreysmiller.org/survivors/

I agree that the artwork is not the only place to give information. I just feel that it should be taken as a serious source of information. I have an appointment to get ready for but I will be looking at your link when I get back.
