8 January 1815. The Battle of New Orleans. A bad day for Packenham and the boys, but a good day for Jackson, as that battle catapulted him to national prominence and the presidency, and we entered with that ascendancy into the era of Manifest Destiny. So one could argue that New Orleans and San Jacinto that followed twenty one years later were the two most important battles ever fought on US soil. Together they shaped us as a nation. They were much more so important than any in the ACW which was decided as to its ultimate outcome, the moment after the first shot was fired on Sumpter.
One door closes though only for another to open. New Orleans was the start of the special relationship we have with the UK and Commonwealth. As such what started at New Orleans shaped the Atlantic Alliance, and that onward to NATO, and the realization that like man, no nation can ever exist as a political island unto itself.

I am sure that today's date was the same as the funeral of Horatio Nelson, after Trafalgar, his body was brought back to Blighty and after lying in state he was finally buried on the 9th January 1806.

Winston Churchill passed on January 24, 1965 one of his famous quotes. "There is no such thing as public opinion. There is only published opinion." Fits with some of our discussions.
