I have seen his work and been impressed by its quality.
My answer is that I would turn and follow the trail, as previous orders have largely been overcome by events.

I am still conducting reconnaissance here. Sadly, in my first Decision Point Post over there, I had somehow put reasoning for the first three decisions I wanted to discuss into one place. They were: Not sending Herendeen down Tullocks Creek. Deciding to leave the trail and send the scouts to Crows Nest. Announcing his decision to attack at the Crows Nest. So, I am rewriting offline and then will update. Embarrassing. Debating whether to post the work in both places.

Hi Mike, putting the same work and questions on both boards is a good idea, we both know each other well and a few of us use both boards too.
You will get a better yeald of answers too, which means you can take in twice as many views to your questions.
This has been done before so it does work.

Rolling Thunder is a motorcycle rally in the DC area to support MIA/POW causes. I believe that there is a national group that sponsors rallies around the country but I have only heard of the DC one. I don't know if Tom knows our newest recruit though

I thought it a shooting drill. 5 steels and five group as soon as the one on your right is hit you fire until you hit. When number 5 is hit a new shooter at 1 fires.

I thought it had links with Vietnam and POW, as the the term was familiar, there was a movie of a similar name and story line from the 70s.
Hope to see more from RT.

Ian, I am not sure but I think you are correct. I believe "Rolling Thunder" was a US Air Force strategy which was similar to in WW2 they called "carpet bombing" Tom could probably advice you on that. Be Well Dan

The answer is ALL OF THE ABOVE. Primarily Dan get's the brass ring for carpet bombing with B52's in Vietnam is where the name originated, but all the rest are equally correct in terms of name adoption.

And Rolling Thunder (the name) partly led John Warden (author of the Air Campaign) to name his proposed bombing campaign in Iraq during Desert storm "Instant Thunder". Multiple critical targets were hit simultaneously causeing severe paralysis in the Iraqi command chain, but not so crippling as we probably think because (1) the Republican Guard took control of the Iraqi X Corps and repositioned themselves and it along VII Corps line of advance to protect the withdrawal from Kuwait and (2) there was an undetected, unknown, in communication brigade on Safwan Airfield (the place selected for the cease fire talks. 2nd BDE/1st ID had the mission to secure it. (Secure means take it without a fight as opposed to Seize). When we got there, there was a stalemate of sorts. The 2BDE commander found the Iraqi Commander (a BG) and said words to the effect of "Sir. You have to leave this airfield. It iw where the cease fire talks are to take place. If you don't leave I will kill you and all your men." The Iraqi responded, "Colonel. You are a soldier. I am a solider. We follow orders. My orders are to hold this place. We are from Tikrit and our families are in danger if we just leave. I need 2-3 hours to get permission to leave." The US COL said, "Sir that is within my discretion." He noticed our soldiers were handing hi soldiers rations. He took an MRE out of his HMMWV and said, "would you like to eat?". The BG pulled himself stiffly erect and said "I have a chef, Colonel. Would YOU like to eat?" "Um. No sir. I will be back in thee hours." Saluted and left.
While he was gone, he had a minor accident and broke his nose and when he came back, had a bandage on it. He met with the Iraqi BG who said, "I will be off this position in one hour. Thank you for not killing my men." "I am glad we did not have to kill your men as well." What happened to you? asked the BG. The CO said, "Sir. My driver asked me if I thought we would have to fight you over this and I said no. Then he hit me." The Iraqi stared at him and nodded. They saluted and an hour later we had the airfield without a shot. (I think the Iraqi wondered why he still had the same driver and didn't shoot him.)
