David aka Deadbeat Your inability to use a "cavalry mindset" to realize that all Benteen needed to do was to put on his super cavalry cape to become An Irish Dragoon and every thing would have fallen in line. If you continue to use logic, common sense or deal in reality you will never see how and where Benteen failed to properly respond to the situation. Regards Brother Dave

Add in terrified. Still do not understand why some still think Reno's support was just 15-20 minures away and Benteen would just "join" Reno in the Timber without a thought in the world as to how Benteen would take 115 men across 2.5 miles of open prairie and, of course, 500-900 NA's would part like the Red Sea. Other option was to follow Custer's route but now ride down steep inclines, cross a fast flowing river and climb 6-10 foot banks on the opposite side. Now about those same 500-900 NA's and the pack train? Best, David Exactly--when Custer went to the bluffs, he created all of the chaos that followed--and perhaps also sending Reno out too early to charge the village without knowing the actual size and location of the village. Even then the situation was probably rectifiable until Custer swung up onto the bluffs and effectively broke off the ability to have timely communication with the rest of his regiment When you think of it, it really is just a serendipitous moment that anyone survived the battle. Bingo, but I do agree with royalwelsh that Custer probably could have avoided a total defeat up until he went north from MTC. And David's right that Benteen wouldn't just be given a free pass to ride through to Reno. It's a modern-day variant of the "Indians always run" nonsense. If Reno had stayed in the timber I think the likely scenario would have been Custer dead in the north, Reno dead in the timber, and Benteen and the pack train mauled but safe on a hill somewhere in the vicinity of Ford A. Cheers, conrad
