don't forget jefferson had a long battle with john Adams as well. sometimes those things that make some people great (like believing in their vision) also can make them very hard to get along with people who are also convinced they have an even better vision.

Looking at your country back then you can see how the British, French and Spanish really calved the place up, I don't know if the Dutch or Portuguese managed to get their hands on any of it, or just those three.

Old New York was once New Amsterdam - or so the song goes, and the Ruskies had their eyes on San Francisco Bay

Ole Steward bought Alaska from the Russkies for $7.2 million and it was called "Seward's Folly" but it sure turned out well for America.
Thinking about Jefferson and Adams makes me realize how fortunate this nation was to have such "Giants" along with Washington who founded this nation. Washington turned down the opportunity to be King and Thomas and John did what they knew to be best for the US. Ironically they both died on July 4, 1826 within five hours of each other. Jefferson died first.
This nation would never have survived if it were not for these men and others who put country before themselves. More is the pity we have no leaders of such stature today or honesty. Regards Dave
