I think that Wayne was hard done by especially by the media, they used to say that he played the same character and never changed his manner of speech, but look at Edward G. Robinson, Bogart and Cagney, they made stacks of films and virtually played the same role and never changed the way they spoke. James Stewart, Randolph Scott and Gary Cooper too were all guilty of playing a similar role in all of their films.
I suppose that I am being a little hard of Cagney as he could do other things, as you could see in the film “I’m a Yankee doodle dandy”

Yan John Wayne was not loved by the media or Hollywood in crowd. They did their best to keep him from winning an Academy Award but in 1969 True Grit was just too good to deny him his Oscar. Wayne was loved by the camera and the American public.
I grew up in the 1950's and The Duke along with Roy Rogers, Gene Autrey and Fess Parker were my heroes of the big screen and Gun Smoke was my favorite oater on TV. These guys always won fair and square and were the Good Guys!
It was not till after Water Gate and Viet Nam that we Americans first realized that politicians lied and had flaws and our heroes had feet of clay except The Duke. He was the epitome of the American male till the day he died. His career as a Bigger Than Life Figure was glorious and still continues to this day. John Wayne was a proud American and he was America to the movie going world. He was uniquely ours and we treasure him still. Dave

My favorite Wayne movie is The Cowboys. But the Searchers certainly is Epic.

The Searchers was the only one of Wayne's films that he did not play some version of John Wayne. It was by far the best one he ever starred in. My view of course. Even as Rooster Cogburn he was still Wayne. Ethan Edwards was in many ways the anti-Wayne and Wayne was superb in the part.
Most people do not catch it but there is a hidden reason that Edwards was so driven. It had nothing to do with his brother, or the children that were killed by Scar's band, or even the capture of Debbie. It was Martha, the love of Edward's life, who married his brother. You really have to pay attention in the beginning of the movie, but it's there. That's why Edwards was Edwards, grief.
Ford's masterful direction and Monument Valley helped too, but only Wayne could have pulled Edwards off on screen

Thanks for bringing this old thread back to life Elwood, great to see the old posts written by Carl, another member who is sadly missed.
I see I made a comment on the sands of iwo jima, that movie was on not long ago and all the way through the marines called each other "Mac". Not you Mac, but no kidding the amount of time the word mac was mentioned was crazy, lost count in fact.

I too miss the Old Constabulary Trooper. He was from a bygone day, but one we should never forget. They stood between the Free World and the machinations of Joe Stalin. One day someone is going to write a very good book on what they did for those five years of their existence.

Strange QC, that 70 years ago the west are still facing the same old foes in China and Russia. Did you see on the news about the WW2 British Hurricans found buried in the Ukraine? Apparently the US bought them off us to give to the Soviets, there was a claus to this deal that any fighters that survived the Russians had to pay for so they hid them and claimed them all as losses, typical Russian behaviour

Good story; Years ago, in the 90's I remember my Dad, who spoke fluent Spanish, (with a Texas accent), telling a friend of his a Mexican saying, usually used as a toast I suppose. Didn't think much about it at the time. Few years later, I was watching The Searchers on tv. Scene where they catch up with Mose in a old cantina. Ethan talks and has a drink with the Mexican who's seen Laurie. He begins with a toast, something like "Bueno suerte, y tiempo para gastarlo." Translates basically as "good luck, and the time to enjoy it". Holy cow! I had heard that before, the saying my Dad spoke years ago. I'm sure he didn't get it from the movie, probably heard it in a cantina down Mexico way.

Indeed I did Ian.
Mister E you got me remembering again. South of the Border down Mexico way. Every time I hear that song, and it's one of my favorites I think of the line "She was a picture in old Spanish lace" Back in the day I was TDY at Fort Sam, and we were quartered at a Ramada Inn the Army took over on Loop 410 because of the BOQ shortage at Fort Sam. Came home one day and the door to the room next door was half open and I heard a woman sobbing. Knocked and ask her if I could be of some assistance. She was a brand new 2LT Nurse, and the reason for her sobbing was she was trying and failing to spit shine her combat boots. She did not know if she should shit or go blind when a Major asked if he could help her. Spent the next hour teaching. Majors do a lot of teaching. Anyway, when she got her boots to a respectable state it was nearing dinner time. Asked her if she would like to get a bite to eat. Yes, says she, let me shower and change. Meet you in half an hour. Long story short we went to dinner in downtown SA, and spent the evening walking by the river, near the Alamo. Why does she remind me of the picture in old Spanish lace you might ask. Well being of Hispanic heritage that is exactly what she wore, a shawl of old Spanish lace. Nothing romantic came from it, but it sure was a nice time I will never forget as long as I live. Just like a trip down Mexico way. Ran into her again years later. She was a senior Captain at the time at Walter Reed, and I was an engaged Half Colonel about to retire. Good memories.
Bueno suerte Mister E.

We are facing the same old foes Ian, because both countries are ruled by despotic people. Never be fooled by the ideology claptrap. They don't really care about what the ideology is capitalism, communism, rattle snake worship, or whatever. That is where the west fails. We are so caught up with the ideology and how foreign it is to our way of thinking, that we overlook the only ideology that their leaders worship, that being sheer raw power.
Power is an ideology all its own, the longing for it, the shoring it up with demagoguery and authoritarian policy, and the ultimate subjugation of the population with it. Actually if you look at it closely that power ideology is easier to achieve in a fragile democracy than it is in a nation of largely peasantry that is Russian and China. Also keep in mind that all democracies are fragile, yours mine, everyone's. It is in the forgetting that power ideology blossoms and thrives.
They are our enemies as nations because we in the west have not made the real target, their leaders our enemies.
