Beth I have written below about my knowledge so far regarding Custer and the Belknap Scandal. It is a all supposition. What ever Custer's motive was to become involved in the congressional hearings regarding Belknap, he was out of his depth and swimming with real sharks. GAC's child like comprehension of the world, with a glorious war here and there, playing dress up at parties and social climbing, was not reality. GAC wanted to play soldier, win a few easy victories over the Indians, accept the thanks of a grateful nation through congressional awards and newspaper praises, and become a world famous lecturer and a darling of the ladies. The Redpath Agency had plans for Custer to travel the country giving lectures about his career and exploits. This could be the path to financial solvency he sought for most of his adult life. I have searched but have not found the basis for Montrose's post regarding Custer being in collusion with Clymer and others. I know it is out there but just haven'f found it yet. Still searching. Regards Dave

Beth Were you aware that William Belknap commanded Crocker's Brigade at Shiloh? It contained the following units: 11TH, 13TH, 15TH and 16TH Iowa Volunteer Infantry Isn't history wonderful? Regards Dave

Dave I am just trying to ascertain why Custer would engage in this sort of business. As far as I know Grant, himself, had always looked favorably upon Custer Damn, you guys are good, you in particular Will, thanks for the answer from the other board. Custer was a Democrat, and somewhat a political activist. We must remember that the Republicans were the closest thing to liberals in those days. The Democrats were attempting to be relevant and looking for issues. Custer was a pawn in all of this. George Brinton McLellan was one of Custer's first hero's and a mentor. McLellan was a party big wig and would later run for president. Custer was attempting to feather his bed. Obama did not even like Hillary, but she was rewarded for being a good soldier during the general election. In this case the Democrat party needed Custer's name to give credence to the attack on Grant's administration. What you think this has not happened many times since.
Regards, Tom
