Ardennes Forest - Got where I was heading. The tip of the spear. Cheneux was the scene of heavy fighting between 82nd AB and Kampfgruppe Peiper. This is a mash-up of a little of the stuff online. Let's do a Pied Peiper (Germany's Custer?) and the bunker he hid in, Panther 131 and Pather 213 imaged. linkHere, link is info on 19th December at Stoumont AND film footage of the combat shot by German film crew. Yes............. This was Battery C of the 143rd AAA Battalion's delaying action (Company A, 823rd TD Batt) link Moving on - 703 TD Batt's 2nd platoon, Company B with four M-36's supported 504th PIR at Cheneux Two of four M-36's were under maintenace whilst the operating pair drew criticism from 504 Officer's whilst sticking it to the creme of Hitler's Waffen waffle rubbish. I skimmed the AAR maybe.... well, a long time back. What the flying fox is a tank destroyer......... little did I know. There, in the mist of night and fog of war, it was over for Herr Peiper and his panzers.

Because the Allied armies of 1944 were quite a bit better than the Allied armies of 1940.
Because German doctrine in 1940 was far better than Allied doctrine.
Because Hitler's legions of 1940 had a good plan, and in 1944 they had a lousy plan
Because German logistics sucked canal water in 1940, but so did the Allied armies logistics. In 1944 German logistics still sucked and Allied logistics was as good as it gets.
That is as deep as anyone needs to go to understand why the Ardennes offensive was about as stupid a move as could be made.

If you have an interest in the 504th you really need to read "Devils In Baggy Pants" by Ross Carter. Monumental book that you would greatly enjoy. You can get it in paperback from the 82nd Airborne Division Museum at Fort Bragg by mail order. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed those links HR, there is a platter of stuff on YouTube regarding the "bulge".
D Day and the Bulge are really interesting, I did the D Day beaches in 2018, wouldn't mind doing similar with the bulge.
I keep getting brochures from ledger coach trips advertising coach trips to the ardennes and visiting various locations. It really depends on how much you want to spend, the more you pay the more you get.
I have been building a US armoured infantry company for nearly a year, it is slow going and up to now I have got two platoons together They are dressed in late war uniform and painted up for the winter of 44/45.

Ian It's a very long time since I went at the airfix, Tamiya and Revel stuff........ It soothed a creative urge for a while but I found myself experimenting with the format and a couple of ladies who didn't enjoy being glued together. My travelling days are limited and the one I may have left in me, if..... will be a blowout extravaganza of incredibly stupid rather than sedate strolls through WWII battlefields. The Ardennes look amazing and Museum interesting. The place seems covered in castles and chocolate factories which must be that EU thing of die happy. Enjoy the sun. Regards.

Don't suppose anyone knows the correct bridge classification for the Centurion Mark 5/1 do they? It should be either 55 or 60 but I cannot find a photo anywhere that shows it.

A bridge classification sign, a yellow disc with black number (usually 60 for Centurions and 11 or 13 for M113A1 vehicles) was also painted on the glacis plate. No formation sign was carried.
